PREVIEW: NWCFL First Division North
Thu 1st August 2019 | Match Previews | By Craig Kendall
After last season's one guaranteed promotion, this campaign sees four NWCFL First Division North sides promoted to the Premier Division - a superb chance for any of our sides.
Last season saw Longridge Town promoted alongside second-placed Avro who gained enough points-per-game to qualify for a second-place promotion.
Atherton LR was given a reprieve as they finished bottom of the league, so it is another chance, this time for new manager Dave Jones.
This season we welcome new NWCFL side Emley AFC, who after a name change have moved laterally from the North East Counties Football League Division One. Also, the First Division North welcomes new sides Golcar United and Pilkington.
Many of the clubs in the league are after one of the four promotion slots including AFC Liverpool's Chris Anderson, Lower Breck's Gary Moore and Jon Lyson of Prestwich Heys.
In 2020/21 we have heard from The FA that many lateral movements could occur, and the probability of up to seven NWCFL Premier Division teams been moved is high and these could include some of the sides on the extremities of the region - therefore any promoted sides on the outskirts of the region could be moved including Emley, Shelley, Golcar United and Steeton if they were promoted - but no guarantees only probabilities.
With many derbies to look forward to this campaign including Emley, Shelley and Golcar who are all within a few miles of each other. Also, Atherton LR and Daisy Hill, Lower Breck and AFC Liverpool are a couple of others which will catch the eye.
The opening fixtures of the NWCFL First Division North is as follows:
THE FULL NWCFL FIRST DIVISION NORTH LINE-UP
AFC Blackpool
AFC Darwen
AFC Liverpool
Ashton Town
Atherton LR
Bacup Borough
Chadderton
Cleator Moor Celtic
Daisy Hill
Emley AFC
Garstang
Golcar United
Holker Old Boys
Lower Breck
Nelson
Pilkington
Prestwich Heys
Shelley
St Helens Town
Steeton
