History

The village of Euxton (pronounced X-ton) nestles between Chorley and Leyland, very close to junction 28 of the M6, and is largely situated along the A49 which runs parallel. The population has grown exponentially in recent years as, like many other such towns and villages, continuous building work has substantially increased the housing stock.

Euxton Villa FC can trace their roots back to 1907. Playing simply under the name Euxton, the club led a nomadic existence, playing at various venues around the village, before finally being able to buy three farmer's fields in 1985, thanks in part to a generous long term loan from Jim Fowler, hence the ground name, though sadly Jim did not live to see the investment blossom.

Some thirty five years ago, they merged with junior teams from the village, and the club continued organic growth to the present day, which sees an Euxton Villa of some forty plus teams of boys, girls, open age and mixed abilities, on a much developed site, able to offer a route from early junior football right through into adult for boys and girls alike.

In 2002 we became Community Club, and proud to be one of the first in the country to attain this status. With the first team stepping up from the Preston and District League to the West Lancashire League, it was clear that further development was needed, and a fundraising drive coupled a Football Foundation grant resulted in the opening of the current clubhouse in 2008 by Chorley MP and Speaker of the House Lindsay Hoyle.

In 2012 Villa were voted Community Club of the Year, and the year after were awarded LFA Charter Standard Development Club of the Year and subsequently FA North West Region Club of the Year. The Club have since been awarded Tier 2 Status and have been selected as one of 150 Clubs nationwide for the FA Community Pilot Scheme. All of this, as is the case with most clubs, has only been possible thanks to an army of selfless and enthusiastic volunteers.
On the playing side, Euxton Villa as previously mentioned joined the West Lancashire League from The Preston District League 2002, a huge step it seemed at the time, but under the stewardship of manager Mark McDonnell, back to back promotions were achieved in the first two seasons, and Villa remained a prominent member of the Prem for twenty years or so, winning the Richardson Cup, The Bolton Wanderers Goldline Trophy, and the prestigious Lancashire Amateur Shield along the way.

Mark, now club Chair, held the manager role for over 25 years before moving upstairs to oversee the next chapter in the club’s development. Matt Atherton, a product of Villa's youth system and someone with an extensive knowledge of the semi pro game, returned as Player Coach, and the push for the next step began in earnest. Although plans were somewhat stymied by the pandemic, nevertheless a huge and ongoing investment of time and capital saw Euxton Villa embark a new adventure, in what was another massive step up to the NWCFL. Credit must go to the Management Committees of both the West Lancashire League and NWCFL for their unwavering support in making the transition.

'Athers' and his coaching team as ever made sure the lads were able to hit the ground running, and free of the pressure of expectation, they duly obliged with a free flowing style of football that carried us all the way to the Playoffs in our very first season, far exceeding all expectations, and only denied a tilt at the final by the width of the crossbar in a penalty shootout. With the early bar set high, the challenge to prove it was no flash in the pan was met head on, and a second finish in the Playoffs saw Villa again miss out, this time by the odd goal in seven. With expectation levels established, the gauntlet was thrown down, could we so it again but this time go one better? Well as we all now know, the answer was a resounding yes, with Villa achieving promotion to Step Five and the Prem with an outstanding performance in front of 2600 at Droylsden.

And still it goes on. In the spring of 2024, funded largely by The Football Foundation and in part by Chorley Council, work began on the next phase of development, meaning that from the start of season 24/25 the main pitch became a state of the art 3g, providing certainty going forward into the unknown effect of climate change as well as improving the experience for the junior section and providing a fantastic asset for the wider community.
Rising costs as a result of a more volatile geopolitical situation slowed the development, meaning that we are still very much a 'work in progress' and further improvements are ongoing to both the clubhouse and the ground, and Euxton Villa FC are extremely grateful for the hard work of the many volunteers and the generosity of the sponsors who allow the progress to continue.
