THE EMIRATES FA CUP THIRD QUALIFYING ROUND
SATURDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2024
WINNING CLUB TO RECEIVE £5,625 LOSERS RECEIVE £1,875
Radcliffe v Bury
No your eyes are not deceiving you. Bury's reward for their superb 3-0 win at Blyth Spartans on Saturday is a local derby against Radcliffe!
Although the two clubs have never met in a competitive fixture, the two are no strangers to each other and the game will bring back memories for a good portion of the Bury fanbase.
After the expulsion of Bury from the Football League ahead of the 2019–20 league season, football continued with the formation of Bury AFC, who entered our league in 2020/21. They groundshared with Radcliffe at Stainton Park, situated around 2.5 miles from Bury, for their first three seasons before the Bury AFC merged with Bury FC Supporters Society to form the current Bury FC and moved to Gigg Lane.
Radcliffe are founder members of the North West Counties Football League, winning the Second Division Championship in the first season in 1982/83. Two years later, they won the First Division Championship (now Premier Division) although were not promoted. Two years later though, they got that promotion as part of a Northern Premier League expansion, and left us after five seasons.
They remained a NPL side until last season, when they were crowned Champions of the Northern Premier League Premier Division and promoted to National League North. They also had a terrific FA Cup run, reaching the final Qualifying Round before losing narrowly at home to Barnet.
Since leaving us, they have faced our sides 56 times, mainly in the FA Cup, Lancashire Challenge Trophy or Manchester Premier Cup. 27 of those ties have come in the FA Cup, the last of which was a 2-1 win against Skelmersdale United in the 2021/22 season.
The tie, which is likely to be all-ticket, will be played on Saturday 28th September. We wish Bury the best of luck.
