Isuzu FA Vase - Draw for the Third Round Proper
Mon 13th November 2023 | FA Challenge Vase | By Martin Fallon
The draw has been made for the Third Round Proper of the Isuzu FA Vase.
Eight of our sides are still in the competition as of today, and the draw guarantees us at least one team in the Fourth Round as there is one all-NWCFL tie in the Third Round Proper.
Games are scheduled for Saturday 2 December 2023, and the prize fund at this stage is £1,125 for winning clubs while the losing teams receive £350.
Ties involving our sides
The Third Round Proper is the last 64 of the competition. Despite it being a national competition, there are still five different zones at this stage. Zone 1 is where the majority of our sides are located with seven ties in this zone, with Brocton the only remaining NWCFL side in Zone 2.
We will start there, with Brocton having to travel once more to Ashby Ivanhoe this coming Tuesday (14th November) after a very late postponement in last Saturday's games. The winners of that tie will be at home to Midland League Premier Division side Tividale, who beat Shirebrook Town 2-0 last Saturday. Tividale are having a torrid time in the league this season with just two wins from 12 games, but they have won three games in the Vase after entering at the Second Qualifying Round stage.
Ashville v Holker Old Boys was postponed on Saturday, which will also be played this coming Saturday. The winners of that will be at home to South Liverpool in the Third Round Proper, a draw which not only gives us a NWCFL side in the Fourth Round but also means a First Division side will be in the Fourth Round. South Liverpool beat Horden Community Welfare 2-1 on Saturday and have never before been in the Third Round Proper.
Last season saw West Didsbury & Chorlton reach the Quarter Finals of the competition where they were very unlucky to lose at home to eventual winners Ascot United. After a 2-1 win over Albion Sports on Saturday, they will be on the road in the Third Round at former NWCFL side Emley, with the Huddersfield based side into the Third Round for the first time since 2012/13 after a 1-0 home win over Heaton Stannington on Saturday.
Another former NWCFL side are Carlisle City, with the now Northern League side overcoming Cheadle Town 2-1 on Saturday. Carlisle are at home again in the Third Round, this time against a Charnock Richard side who won 4-2 on penalties on Saturday against NCEL side Eccleshill United after a 2-2 draw.
Ramsbottom United last reached the Third Round in 2003/04. but they did so on Saturday NCEL side against Bottesford Town in a memorable game. The visitors got stuck on the way meaning a half hour delay, with the game not finishing until almost 5.45pm after an injury and lots of stoppage time! It finished 2-2 and Rammy won 5-4 on penalties. Their reward is a home game against another NCEL side in Hallam, who haven't reached this stage also since 2007/08.
Northern League side Whickham overcame Bury 1-0 on Saturday, and their reward is another NWCFL side at home in the Third Round. Irlam will be the visitors up to Gateshead, with the Salford based side looking to emulate their famous 2018/19 Vase run when they reached the last 16 before losing to eventual winners Chertsey Town. It will be Irlam's sixth away tie from their last seven in the Vase, but it won't hold any fears after Saturday's 6-1 win at Seaham Red Star.
