Charnock Richard secured the 2021-22 Macron Cup in style with an impressive but hard working performance in the final, which this year was held at Chorley FC's Victory Park.  Charnock Richard took on a Cammell Laird side that had finished strongly in Division One South, only recently won the Wirral Senior Cup and are also finalists in next weekend's Edward Case Cup final.

The setting matched the occasion with a well organised Vctory Park hosting 516 souls who were all looking forward to a good football match, and thats what they got.

Cammell Laird started the stronger side as they had settled sooner.  Lairds were spreading the ball about and came close to opening the scoring with Jack Wood’s testing Connor Eastham early on with a well targetted header.  Shortly after Nathan Fairhurst fired in a long range shot which forced Eastham into an athletic save to keep the scores level. It took Charnock Richard around 20 minutes or so to settle into the game as they started passing the ball around the Victory Park surface, this allowed Charnock some room, particularly on the flanks of the wide pitch.

Nathan Davidson in the Cammell's goal was starting to get busy as Lewis Haydock tested him with a strong shot from just inside the box just after 25 mins and shortly after, Hadock had another chance when his header connected with a cross, but again, the Lairds stopper was equal to it.   Jack Wood was a constant threat to Charnock Richard as he was covering a lot of the wide Victory Park pitch, giviving the Charnock Richard defenders lots to think about. Both keepers were busy but a lot of the play was in the middle of the park as a number of fearless tackles went in from both teams, not all of them necessarily legal within the laws of the game, but still meaty nontheless. The opening goal came on 43 minutes when Charnock's Danny Regan received the ball on the left wing and immediately cut in, leaving his marker behind, he then made his way to the left hand corner of the box and struck a sweet effort wight across the goal that Davidson seemed a little slow to get down to and the ball settled into the bottom right hand corner

The second commenced following some superb tunes booming out from the speakers in the stand and people enjoying the occasion.  Lots of families were at the ground, the pies were flowing out of the snack shack and people were staying well hydrated with lots of beverages flowing from the general direction of the social club into the corwd.  This half proved a lot more straightforward as Charnock were in the ascendancy almost straight from the kick off.

Brad Carsley moved the ball quickly along the right hand flank and he played the ball in to the right hand side of the box to Spencer Bibby, who guided the ball past the Lairds keeper to immediately double the lead.  Again, both sides were not hesitant in going in for a tackle, however, the match officials were on top of the game and ensured that the match flowed.

On 67 minutes there was an air of expectation when Charnock Richard brought on Carl Grimshaw, the striker immediately signalling his intent to his team mates by taking up the centre forward position.  As the game continued, Charnock were in control of the game and efforts from Hamm and Carsley were just wide of the mark and of course Grimshaw was proving a handful.  On 74 minutes Ross O'Farrell headed home from a Haydock Cross to make it 3-0 and the Lairds players seemed resigned to their fate.  On 78 minutes the game was all but over when Nathan Nickeas showed good ball control to receive a long pass and he immediately turned towards the Lairds goal and fired home from close range to make it 4-0.

As the game was coming to a close there was an air of inevitability as on 86 minutes Carl Grimshaw got his goal which rounded off what was ultimately a comprehensive win for Charnock Richard.  Lairds will be looking at the early chances in the first half and their possession of the first 15-20 minutes, however, Charnock Richard were the stronger team on the day.  Nathan Fairhurst stepping up to receive the Macron Cup from League Director Mr Ian Williams to the delight of their support.  All in all, a good day and a fitting end to a strong competition.
