The draw for the Second Round Qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup has been published this afternoon.

Just two of our sides remain in the competition at this stage and they have both been given away trips to previous NWCFL champions. Atherton LR will face 2022 Premier Division winners Macclesfield whilst Chadderton make the short trip to Moston to face FC United of Manchester, winners of what was the First Division back in 2007.

LR reached this stage via wins over Ossett United, FC St Helens and a derby win against Atherton Collieries whilst Chadderton saw off Stockport Town, Irlam and Bishop Auckland. As current members of the National League North, Macclesfield enter the competition at this stage whilst FC United won 4-0 away at Rossington Main in their opening game of the cup campaign on Saturday.

The Second Round Qualifying will take place across the weekend of Saturday 13 September, with winning clubs at this stage picking up £3375 from the prize fund and losing teams collecting £1125.

Analysis

FC United of Manchester started life in the NWCFL, winning the First Division and Premier Division in successive seasons in 2005/06 and 2006/07.

They are now firmly established in the Northern Premier League Premier Division but did have a four year spell in the National League North.

Last season saw them finish 17th in the league, but they have started much brighter this season. They are currently top of the league with four wins from their opening five games.

In the FA Cup they have reached the First Round Proper three times in their history, but have not got past the Second Qualifying Round in their last four campaigns.

Chadderton lost twice to FC United in their only league season together in 2006/07. Their only other meeting came in October 2016 in the Manchester Premier Cup with United running out 6-0 winners.

Macclesfield also started their journey in the NWCFL and were Premier Division Champions in 2021/22. They achieved promotion again the season after by winning the Northern Premier League West, and won their third league title in four years last season by winning the Northern Premier League.

They are now playing their trade in National League North and are in 6th place after winning three and losing one of their opening six games.

They have reached the Final Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in each of the last two seasons, and will be determined to go one better this year and reach the First Round for the first time.

This will be a first time meeting between the two clubs with the two not meeting in Macc's season in our league due to being in different divisions.
