1. The ECC rumbles on
It’s been two weeks since the last one of these articles, and, in that time, we’ve finally seen some fixtures from the first round proper of the Edward Case Cup. And the matchday was not without its interesting results, the most headline-grabbing of which was Cammell Laird 1907 being demolished 8-0 at home by Stockport Georgians.
In the early days of this week, the draw for the second round was conducted. There are currently 20 teams still in the competition at the time of writing (there are some games from the first round yet to be played), with only 16 places left to be officially claimed. See the full draw here!
2. Presentations of the Month!
To quote our own Ben Wilkinson, “it’s raining articles on the website this week”, and he’s right! And a lot of that is down to the fact that September’s Players, Goalkeepers and Clubs of the Month are being announced left, right and centre.
Just yesterday, all of Bury FC, Holker Old Boys and Stafford Town were officially presented their September Clubs of the Month awards for each of the three NWCFL divisions; and Atherton LR’s Joe Bickerstaffe was presented the Goalkeeper of the Month award for the First Division North for his efforts. As for the rest of the individual awards? Well…
3. Individual Awards of the Month!
You don’t have to scroll very far down to see about Joe Bickerstaffe, but if you want to know who else has been credited for their individual performances throughout September, then look no further. Rounding out our Reusch Goalkeepers of the Month are Irlam’s Jack Buckley, and Winsford United’s Jacob Kirwan.
For the outfield players, we have Chadderton goal machine Lewis-Simon Byrne being honoured in the Prem; Maine Road’s Alex Panter taking the plaudits in the North; and the South saw a retention of this award for Stafford Town’s unstoppable Matthew Hearsey. Congratulations to all of our winners!
4. Local Cup Competitions
Let’s talk about some on-field action from the last few days then, shall we? Alongside Bury’s unfortunate defeat in the FA Cup 4th Qualifier, as well as the macron Cup, there were also matches featuring NWCFL sides in the Manchester Premier Cup, TJ Vickers Premier Cup, West Riding County Cup, Staffordshire Senior Cup, AND Cheshire Senior Cup.
There were victories, in no particular order, in these local affairs for all of Abbey Hey, Chadderton, Euxton Villa, Steeton, Irlam, Foley Meir, Route One Rovers and Allscott Heath. Colne and Cammell Laird 1907 won the Lancashire FA Trophy and Wirral & District Cup respectively last season – only time will tell if there are any similar success stories in 2024/25.
5. WINSford United
Across all three divisions in the NWCFL, and all 60 teams, there’s only one that are spotless in their most recent six matches, and I’m sure that the title of this entry is a giveaway. Winsford United are looking more than comfortable in their second straight season of NWCFL First Division South football, evidenced by their recent run of form.
In their last six in all competitions, Dean Jones and Dom Johnson’s side have scored 11 and conceded 2, which doesn’t seem like an incredible amount, but those 11 are a drop in the water compared to the mammoth 54 in 20 games that they’ve managed since the season began. Not even the formidable Stafford Town are without fault in their last six, falling to Sutton United (not that one, the Birmingham-based one) in the Isuzu FA Vase just over three weeks ago.
