Five Things We Learned 2024/25 - Gameweek 39

1. Bury are CHAMPIONS!
It has been a serious battle between Bury and Lower Breck for the Premier Division title, with both teams pushing each other right to the final day, but in the end, it’s the Shakers who have come out on top and been crowned champions.
On the final day of the league season, just shy of 9,000 people watched as they hosted Burscough at Gigg Lane and battered their visitors 4-0 to win the title; lift the trophy; and take their points tally to 109 for the season, the third highest in NWCFL history. Congratulations to all involved with the club!
2. Atherton LR are TRIPLE CHAMPS!
It has been a weekend for the history books for Atherton LR, as has already been eloquently explained on this very website in an extended article earlier today. Click HERE to give that a read, but just in case you’re in a rush, here’s the cliff notes.
On Saturday, Atherton were the visitors to Winsford United in the First Division Champions Cup, where they defeated their hosts 3-2 to secure a second trophy, to accompany their league title. Then, on Easter Monday, they went three for three by beating Stafford Town 3-0 in the Edward Case Cup Final. Dave Jone’s men are treble winners!
3. The FDN play-off final is decided
This weekend not only played host to the Prem final day, but also saw the beginning of the play-offs campaign in the First Divisions North and South. In the former, there was drama all around as Droylsden hosted Holker Old Boys in a contest that progressed all the way to penalties after a 1-1 draw. In the end, the hosting Bloods secured their spot in the final by winning 4-2 in the shootout.
They will meet Euxton Villa in the play-off final this weekend, who had to win a penalty shootout of their own to overcome Nelson last weekend – and theirs was a marathon, not a sprint! After a 1-1 draw in regulation time, the spot kicks at the Diasy Arena went all the way to the teams’ respective goalkeepers. In the end, Villa got the win with a 10-9 score in the shootout.
4. The FDS play-off final is decided
Moving across to the First Division South, and there was more drama to be had, but no more penalties shootouts to be observed. Firstly, league runners-up Abbey Hulton United made quick work of Eccleshall, whose play-off bow was one they’d rather forget. Jon Beaumont’s men won 5-0 on home soil to breeze into the final, which they will host this coming weekend.
Their visitors will be Stafford Town, who went through an absolute war last weekend with Sandbach United at their Evans Park ground. EIGHT different players scored in a nine-goal thriller, with four of those goals coming with less than 10 minutes to play. Staffs just about saw out a memorable 5-4 victory, and will face AHU for the chance at promotion a week before facing Charnock Richard in the Macron Cup final.
5. R1R are West Riding County Cup CHAMPS
Route One Rovers have largely had a season to forget in their second ever NWCFL campaign. Despite being goal-hungry ones to watch last time out, they have fallen down the league table in 2024/25 to a point now where their status at Step 6 will be subject to a reprieve from relegation. But they have given themselves something important to celebrate this past week.
En route to a West Riding County Cup Final with Golcar United on Tuesday, Rovers had already beaten Harrogate Railway Athletic, Armthorpe Welfare, Albion Sports and Campion. And they left it late in the final, but they got the job done. Danyal Yasin scored twice, with his winner being struck in the 90th minute, to secure the trophy for Arshad Mahmood and Mohammed Yasser’s men. Congratulations to everyone involved at the Marley Stadium on your achievement!
