Five Things We Learned 2024/25 - Gameweek 6

Wed 4th September 2024 | Five Things
By Jay Cooper

1. Three started, two/three remain

The Emirates FA Cup was back at the weekend, and two of the three remaining NWCFL teams in the hat absolutely nailed their job in under 90 minutes. Both Bury and West Didsbury and Chorlton overcame Garforth Town and Silsden, winning 2-0 and 4-2 respectively.

Barnoldswick Town's clash with Lancaster City told a different story. The game at the Giant Axe finished 0-0, and the replay yesterday bred another goalless draw after 90 minutes.

2. Rammy aren't resolute to all

Ramsbottom United have established themselves as the true frontrunners of the Premier Division for 2024/25. After adjusting to life at this level last season, following relegation, they've only lost one game so far this league season... or that was the case before the weekend.

Longridge Town were the visitors on Saturday to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium, knowing that they faced an unenviable task to slow the league leaders. But goals from Leighton Hewitt, Ben Trafford and substitute Jack Anderton earned Town maximum points, and gave Rammy's chasers a new lease of life.

3. Whoever blinks first, loses (at home)

Of the top five teams in the First Division North this season, there are four who are yet to stumble in a home game (sorry, Nelson).

All of league leaders Atherton LR, Holker Old Boys, Droylsden and Euxton Villa are blemish-less on their coffee books in their own back yards in the league in 2024/25. Both Atherton and Villa are also yet to drop points in any capacity with the home crowd behind them.

4. The wait goes on for Skem

It wasn't a well-kept secret that Skelmersdale United struggled on their return to the NWCFL last season. After a second consecutive relegation, the club appointed old manager Tommy Lawson but are yet to reap full rewards in the First Division North.

From 10 games in the league this season, Skem have managed two hard-fought draws with both Garstang and Route One Rovers, but their other games have seen them on the wrong side of the scoreline. That first win is going to be a massive weight off some shoulders, but for now, the wait continues.

5. Wakefield flying for Foley

In the First Division South, Foley Meir are currently 11th in the table, which is much more comfortable than their position last time they were in the division. They're not necessarily soaring above the clouds, but one of their players is living life to the fullest.

Thomas Wakefield is the out and out top scorer of the First Division South. From 10 games, the striker has just as many goals for his side. Abbey Hulton United's Keiran Brown is second in the table, with 8 league goals to his name. The race for the golden boot has well and truly begun.
