Mon 3rd March 2025 | Match Reviews | By Jay Cooper
Another weekend, another round of games from all 3 divisions of the NWCFL. Let's run through the best and worst of what the last week has had to offer.
Groundhop 2025
Ramsbottom United 2-3 FC St Helens
Stockport Georgians 3-1 Sandbach United
Stockport Town 0-1 Cheadle Town
New Mills 2-0 Cheadle Heath Nomads
Glossop North End 0-2 West Didsbury and Chorlton
Abbey Hey 0-0 Prestwich Heys
Droylsden 3-2 Darwen FC
Premier Division
Friday:
Chadderton’s run of poor form continued at pace on Friday night as they hosted fellow Manchester outfit Irlam. John Johnston in particular was not in a merciful mood for Irlam as they battered their opponents around Oldham, eventually hitting them for six. Johnston got four as Irlam won 6-0.
Saturday:
Bury are finally, FINALLY beginning to storm to Premier Division title, and they made a statement on Saturday with a destructive win over Litherland REMYCA. Aaron Chalmers, Rustam Stepans, Lewis-Simon Byrne, Aiden Walker and Cameron Fogerty all scored before half time as the Shakers came away with a 7-0 victory.
Colne took a giant step in the right direction away from the relegation zone, and they did so with a mind-blowing comeback victory over Charnock Richard. The hosts were 2-0 down after 22 minutes, but a Jude Entwistle brace, followed by a Jak McKinlay winner in the 88th minute saw Colne emerge victorious, winning 3-2.
There were goals galore in some non-groundhop games in the Premier Division this past Saturday, and the match between Longridge Town and Lower Breck is a prime example. The former were on home soil, but the latter blew their hosts away with a five-goal second-half blitz to win 5-1.
Padiham tightened their grip on their play-off position this weekend with their welcoming of AFC Liverpool to the Ruby Civil Arena. They won 2-1 in the first half, and 2-1 in the second half, to eventually run out 4-2 winners and solidify their place in 4th.
Other scores:
Burscough 2-1 FC Isle of Man
Pilkington 2-0 Barnoldswick Town
Squires Gate 0-1 South Liverpool
First Division North
Friday:
The inevitable was confirmed on Friday evening – Skelmersdale United are now officially dependent on a reprieve to survive the drop in the First Division North, as they can’t escape the relegation zone. Euxton Villa put Skem to the sword at the Jim Fowler Memorial Ground, beating them 4-0 and condemning them to the drop.
Saturday:
Route One Rovers managed only their second league win since the end of November on Saturday, defeating Ashton Town on their travels on Saturday. Danyal Yasin and Mohammed Hasnain both bagged in the first half, and a late Conor Rady penalty of Town couldn’t save a point. R1R won 2-1.
Maine Road recorded a victory in a middle of mid-table clash against Ashton Athletic, with the aid of two penalties. Calum Wilson gave Athletic the lead, but both Jean-Jacques Kirongozi and Oliver Lomas were cool from the spot either side of half time to ensure a 2-1 win for Ryan Eiselt and Reece Lyndon’s side.
Other scores
Friday:
Daisy Hill 0-1 Atherton LR
Saturday:
Garstang 0-2 Thornton Cleveleys
Maghull 1-1 Holker Old Boys
Steeton 0-1 Nelson
First Division South
Abbey Hulton United left it as late as they could have as they welcomed Cammell Laird 1907 to Drayton Beaumont Park. Jack Kelly had initially given Laird the lead before they were pegged back, and an 87th minute goal by James Eaton looked to seal the points for the visitors, but AHU snatched a draw at the death, with Kieran Brown scoring in the 97th minute to make it 2-2.
Alsager Town recorded a victory this weekend on their travels to Allscott Heath. Adam Dahou, Jamie Walker and Ashton Brogan all scored in the final 20 minutes for a 3-0 win, as Alsager took a big step towards the play-off places, and Allscott were left looking up at Barnton, still below the dotted line.
Ashville kept their play-off chance alive on Saturday as they went on their travels to Market Drayton Town. Peter Morgan bagged the only goal of the first half for Steven Scott’s men, with Joel Kelly and Mark Madden scoring after the break to help Ashville escape with a 3-1 win.
Let’s end with two games pivotal to the First Division South title race. Firstly, Stafford Town had an afternoon to forget as Runcorn Town made the trip to Evans Park. James Apperly got the ball rolling for Runcorn early, scoring a brace in the first quarter hour, before Matthew Vickers bagged one of his own in an eventual 5-1 victory for the visitors. Stafford’s title challenge is being chipped away at bit by bit.
With that previous result in mind, league-leading Winsford United won’t feel so bad about shipping a last-minute equaliser to Eccleshall. Winsford had a two-goal advantage slip through their fingers on Saturday, with Jacob Vernon bagging the all-important goal in the 95th minute for Eccleshall to ensure a 2-2 draw
Other scores:
Shawbury United 1-0 Barnton
