Abbey Hey and Prestwich Heys played out a goalless draw in Sunday’s opening Groundhop fixture.

Opportunities were sparse in the first half as the crowd of 610 watched on at The Abbey Stadium and it was another game where the two sides went in level at the break.

Chances started flowing after the hour mark, first Abbey Hey’s Jordan Barnett flashed a long range effort just over the bar before Michael Burke beat the offside trap but couldn’t keep his strike on target with just the Abbey Hey ‘keeper to beat.

Barnett was a danger again from a set piece as his 20 yard free kick went just wide of the near post.

The hosts got even closer to taking the lead on 70 minutes when Luke Merrill hit the upright after some tenacious work from Cody Artwell to keep possession.

Colne’s win over Charnock Richard yesterday meant that the gap between Heys and safety was now four points, meaning a win here would be crucial in their survival fight.

They were handed a golden chance to take the lead on 82 minutes when the referee pointed to the spot after a handball inside the area but Max Bardsley-Rowe’s powerful strike was kept out by ‘keeper Oliver Green low to his left.

The game became a frantic end-to-end contest in the closing stages and Abbey hit the post yet again with Finley Stanyer unable to squeeze the ball between ‘keeper and goal-frame from point blank range.

Bardsley-Rowe’s afternoon got worse as he was given his marching orders by David Chisnall inside stoppage time and the visitors finished the game a man down.
