An early penalty proved to be the difference as Cheadle Town came out on top in a hard-fought derby with rivals Stockport Town at Stockport Sports Village.
A Groundhop crowd of 432 saw the 10 men of Stockport battle hard for over an hour after ‘keeper Joshua Schofield saw red.
The ‘Lions’ of Stockport thought they had found an opener after just two minutes through Jack Atkinson before the officials ruled the goal out amid protests from the players.
The first first-half goal of the Groundhop did arrive in short order after Cheadle’s Oliver Putnam was hacked down, referee Thomas De Prez wasting no time in awarding a spot kick. Liam Delaney confidently sent Joshua Schofield the wrong way from 12 yards to give the visitors the lead at SSV.
Things went from bad to worse for Town on 26 minutes when Izac Khan latched onto a loose pass back and Schofield brought him down 25 yards out, denying a clear goal scoring opportunity in the eyes of the referee who duly dished out a red card. Player-manager Paul Turnbull donned the shirt and gloves for the remainder of the game.
There was little to separate the two sides for the remainder of the half and for the opening exchanges after the break before Edwards Servuts came within inches of doubling the visitor’s lead when he clattered the crossbar with a thumping header after 66 minutes.
Turnbull had his first real goalkeeping test shortly after when he did brilliantly to impose himself and keep hold of the ball to deny the easiest of finishes for Putnam in a goalmouth scramble.
The hosts sprang into action after this pair of close calls and came within a whisker of restoring parity when a goalbound effort was cleared off the line by a Cheadle defender.
The game petered out as neither side were able to assert dominance and Cheadle take the points in the second game of the day.
