Two early goals gave New Mills the victory against Cheadle Heath Nomads in the First Division South.

It was another 500+ crowd for this weekend as 558 were packed into Church Lane for the third game of the day.

New Mills came agonisingly close to going a goal to the good inside the opening minutes when Thomas Woodward’s effort flashed wide of the upright.

Woodward was dangerous again six minutes later and won his side a penalty when he was brought down by the boot of Nomads ‘keeper Ryan Forde. Forde swiftly made amends however with a fine diving save to deny William Shawcross’ resultant spot kick.

The ‘Millers’ did get their goal however when Ashley Woods turned home a cross from the left hand side, leaving Shawcross with no chance.

The floodgates threatened to open when centre-half Chris Pauley thumped a stunning volley into the back of the net after a corner was only half-cleared by the visiting defence.

Nomads were determined to get themselves back into the game after the early onslaught but, shooting down the hill in the first half, they couldn’t put together any clear cut chances.

It was a similar story after the interval with both teams trading blows at the sun set in the Peak District, views of the nearby church and rolling hills in the distance providing some secondary entertainment in the background.

The away side will feel that they had enough opportunities to at least grab a consolation but the ‘Millers’ had other ideas and claim a clean sheet and a first home win since August.
