Five Things We Learned 2024/25 - Gameweek 15

1. A rare Rammy shutout
From 23 games played in the NWCFL Premier Division, Ramsbottom United have started to look as though they are going to run away with the league title. Chadderton are their next closest challengers, but there’s six points between the two sides at the minute, and unbeaten Bury are off the pace as of right now due to being a full 5 matches behind in the schedule.
However, despite avoiding any potentially damaging defeat this weekend, the Rammy faithful may have felt as though they’d lost, because, for the first time in 18 matches that they’d failed to score a goal. On top of that, it was their first match 26 that ended totally goalless. It was a result that I’m sure struggling Glossop North End would’ve snapped your hand off for if you’d offered it to them before kick-off.
2. Beating the traffic is not always worth it
We’ve all been there, haven’t we? The match your watching is fine, but a little predictable, and you know that if you stay right the final whistle you might get caught up in congestion or miss the last ten minutes of a particular TV show. Well, anyone with that mindset who might’ve acted on it at the Step Places Stadium this past Saturday will be kicking themselves.
With visiting AFC Liverpool in the driving seat, 2-1 up against West Didsbury and Chorlton, the clock struck 80 minutes, and this game suddenly became the standout of the weekend. AFC extended their lead, West pulled one back, AFC repeated the trick, but West cut the deficit to one goal AGAIN in the 95th minute to set up the tensest of finishes, before AFC finally got over the line. A thriller at Brookburn Road!
3. Darwen don’t do draws
I was going to make this entry about the fact that Darwen FC, whose season has been inconsistent at its simplest thus far, have won three on the bounce in all competitions, scoring 12 and conceding just 1 in that time.
However, whilst researching those results, I found something even more interesting about Darwen’s results. This season, from 22 matches in all competitions, Darwen have won 10 and lost 12. For the non-mathematicians amongst you, that’s a big ZERO in the draw column. Whilst it’s true that draws at this level of the game are generally less common than at the elite level, this stat is still unexpected and eye-catching.
4. Stafford’s wall is finally breached
It’s taken over three months, but, for the first time this season, Stafford Town have been beaten at home, and it came in an NWCFL game. This past Saturday saw the climactic meeting of the top two sides in the First Division South, as Town hosted Winsford United, and they must have thought that it would be business as usual on home soil when Patryk Mazurkiewicz scored twcie to establish a lead.
However, a mad final 10 minutes of this match saw an own goal scored to the benefit of the visitors, before an 89th minute strike from Reece Davies secured a momentous three points for Dean Jones and Dom Johnson’s side. It’s only Stafford’s second loss in the league this season, whilst Winsford have now won their last 10 in all competitions.
5. Glyn Norman with no problems away from home
Cammell Laird 1907 faced an interesting new challenge this past weekend. The appoint of Glyn Norman to the post of first team manager since the departure of Andy Cass is no longer breaking news, but Norman’s first hurdle away from the KRCT LTD Stadium reared its head on Saturday, with an away trip to Allscott Heath,
Allscott have been unfortunate in recent matches, losing 8-2 last weekend, and 9-0 not all too long ago to Stafford Town. Saturday was not the redemption they may have been hoping for, as travelling Laird were 2-0 up in the opening 10, and eventually won 4-0 to alleviate any fears that their new manager bounce had already faded.
