Five Things We Learned 2024/25 - Gameweek 13

1. The second round is official for the Vase

We’ll get into the eye-catching results of the past weekend’s FA Vase fixtures in just a moment, but for now, let’s look to the future at the SIXTEEN teams from the NWCFL that will be taking their place in the second round proper of the Isuzu FA Vase.

The draw took place after the weekend’s games and sees only three matches contested between two sides from the NWCFL – Abbey Hey VS Atherton LR; South Liverpool VS Chadderton; and Winsford United VS Darwen FC. Every other NWCFL side who won in the first round have been drawn to non-NWCFL opposition. So, in an ideal world, round three of the Vase will see 13 NWCFL representatives.

2. Games of the day from the Isuzu FA Vase

There is plenty to unpack from Saturday’s Vase matches. Let’s start with struggling Darwen FC, who made easy work of Harrogate Railway Athletic, winning 3-0 via a Rio Wilson-Heyes hat-trick; Market Drayton Town advanced by hammering Hereford Pegasus 4-0; and Padiham one-upped MDT by trouncing Horden Community Welfare.

There were many clashes between two NWCFL sides to speak of too – Atherton LR overcame Colne; Chadderton edged past Bury on penalties; Ramsbottom United made easy work of Euxton Villa; West Didsbury and Chorlton scored either side of half time to see of Stockport Town; and Winsford United slew AFC Liverpool 4-0 in quite the upset on paper. As for Sandbach United…

3. Sandbach sneak a win away down the Alley

That pun was tenuous, but you get where I’m going with this, don’t you? Sandbach United were away at Glossop North End in an all-NWCFL FA Vase tie on Saturday, and with 90 minutes on the clock, the Prem side were heading for the hat with a 1-0 lead.

Step forward Kieran Alley. Sandbach’s star man for the day scored once as the clock struck the final minute of the match, and then a second time after three added minutes to turn the game entirely on its head and send the visitors home with a place in the next round of the competition. Sheringham/Solskjaer stuff from Sandbach!

4. A tidal wave of Tuesday goals

With the majority of NWCFL Prem sides in FA Vase action this past weekend, Tuesday night under the lights was an eventuality for some, and that certainly produced some goals. Burscough and Chadderton played out a back and forth 3-4 encounter; Irlam bettered Litherland REMYCA 5-0; and Padiham and FC St Helens shared the points from a 6-goal thriller, including a goal in a million by Willem Tomlinson.

Elsewhere, in some local cup competitions, Sandbach United capitalised on their late winner from Saturday by blasting Barnton to win 5-0; Market Drayton Town did the same away from home to see off Ludlow Town; and Allscott Heath went one better in the Macron Cup, slaying Shawbury United 6-1 on their travels.

5. When will Bury be beaten in the league?

It’s always nice to have an unbeaten run go on for as long as possible, but it can be just as nice for a team to snap such an invincible streak. In this season’s Premier Division, Bury FC currently have a streak to protect, and a target on their backs.

With some headline-grabbing cup runs under their belts this season, the Shakers have fallen a bit behind in league matches, but they’re still, inevitably, near the top of the table, and they’re currently without a single tally in the L column after 15 games played. A beyond impressive run for Dave McNabb’s side, but certainly one that struggling Colne would LOVE to ruin on Saturday. Let’s see what happens.
