1. The Edward Case Cup is back!
The FA Cup and the FA Vase have been, the Macron Cup is coming soon, but for now, here we go again with the Edward Case Cup for 2024/25! It was merely the Preliminary Round that took place yesterday, but that’s not to say there were no headlines.
New Mills and Foley Meir went right to the wire in a 2-2 draw that saw Foley Meir slide by on penalties; and Winsford United, inspired by a hat-trick from Jack Woolley put Market Drayton Town to the sword in a 7-0 thrashing.
2. Five-star AFC Liverpool
From the only game in the NWCFL on Friday last week, AFC Liverpool and Chadderton stole the show. From this game at the Falcon Fire Stadium, AFC, the away side in this match, made themselves right at home, and overcame their hosts to win 5-2. And they weren’t done.
A mere four days later, Phil Stafford and his side were again on the road for a trip to Charnock Richard. A chaotic game saw AFC Liverpool go 5-2 up again with just over ten minutes left. They conceded two further goals but held on for a 5-4 win. Point is, if you’re going to come at AFC Liverpool, you’d better come with more arms than they have, which is no easy feat.
3. Colne keen to stop the bleeding
It’s been a tricky start to Colne’s second successive season in the NWCFL. With only a point to their name until August 20th, they’ve since overcome Ramsbottom United in the league, which reads as something of an upset if you’re judging by the league table.
However, one thing that has been difficult to ignore is the fact that they are conceding too often. There have been defeats to the tune of 8-0 to Longridge Town, and their two most recent league matches have seen them lose 6-0 to Abbey Hey and 5-1 to Squires Gate. There’s absolutely loads of time yet to turn this around, but this is a problem that any team would want to address ASAP.
4. Bacup bouncing back
It has been a turbulent few weeks for Bacup Borough. Brent Peters’ side started the 2024/25 season like a house on fire, running away with the league and keeping clean sheets in their first four games.
However, their last 7 matches have been forgettable, at best. They’ve suffered six losses in that time, but finally began to make amends with their 5-0 demolition of Garstang on Saturday. If this is the start of a revenge tour, I fear for Darwen FC in their next match.
5. RUNCORN WIN A GAME!
So watch it, drink it in! It’s taken 12 competitive attempts in 2024/25, but on Saturday, Runcorn Town finally managed to bag not just their first win of the season, but also their first points in the league.
A Jorge Dwyer goal early in the first half against Stockport Georgians had fans on edge for a further hour of play until a Lewis Crane penalty doubled Town’s advantage. Georgians fought back to 2-1, but were conclusively undone by Nathan Gee in the 96th minute to secure the W for Darren Moore’s side.
