With the majority of NWCFL teams in action across the weekend, in both the League and FA Vase, there was plenty of scope to speak to club managers for their opinions on what their teams produced in their 90 minutes.
Isuzu FA Vase:
Ben Greenidge, of Chadderton (Eccleshill United 3-7 Chadderton)
We had an idea of how they would play, and we struggled in the first half to cope with their long ball. It caused us problems and we were fortunate to go into the break ahead. In the second half we were able to control the game and play our football. The lads were ruthless in front of goal, and we deservedly progress into the next round.
Jay Foulds, of Ashton Athletic (Ashton Athletic 2-1 Stockport Georgians)
It’s been a very special week for me personally, managing Ashton Athletic for over half a century of games! After Tuesday’s disappointing result we needed a performance to bounce back and playing in the FA Vase, there is no bigger motive.
I thought the first half we struggled to get to grips with a determined Stockport side and conceded the opening goal. We managed to drag ourselves back into the game with a Joe White goal from a corner. A change of formation saw a much improved second half performance and we deservedly took the lead through Deklan Hill.
Stockport pushed for the equaliser, but I thought we defended excellently to see the game out. We have a nice away trip to Barnsley to play Wombwell Town in the next round which we will look forward to.
Thanks to everyone for the messages this week – that is what makes non-league special.
Danny Moss, of Barnton (Bottesford Town 1-5 Barnton)
We've had back-to-back poor results, so I was really keen to see what type of character we had in the dressing room. We looked nervous for 10-15 minutes but after we saw that period out, we dominated the game and should have scored more than the five we did.
We gave two lads debuts, and another lad his first start, which was also pleasing for the management. All in all, it was most definitely worth the six hour round trip.
Premier Division:
Ryan Donnellan, of Charnock Richard (Charnock Richard 2-1 FC Isle of Man)
It was a well ground result for us. After a perfect start, scoring within two minutes, Isle of Man came to life and they had a lot of possession, but without much purpose up until half time. We regrouped during half time and came out much better, and we managed the game very well, especially after scoring our second goal. I wouldn’t say it was our best performance, but we came out with three points – job done.
First Division North:
Arron Ripley, of Nelson (Nelson 5-1 Bacup Borough)
We’re delighted with the result against Bacup from Saturday. We weren't good value for our 3-1 lead at half-time, but we were clinical in front of goal. In the second half we controlled the game for the full 45 minutes. Charlie Frost scored four in the process.
It's been an important week for the group after two poor performances/results prior to the Darwen game, but to bounce back against two local sides, scoring eight and only conceding one makes me happy. We now need to try and cap the busy schedule off at Garstang with three more points.
First Division South:
Sam Golden, of Foley Meir (Foley Meir 4-0 Wolves Sporting)
We were extremely pleased with our performance on Saturday in what was a tough encounter, considering the minor sticky patch we have encountered over the last few games, and the opposition winning three on the bounce. But from minute one, we could see the game was only going one way!
Our application and quality on the ball allowed us to control the tempo and flow of the game, and full credit must go to our lads – they dominated from start to finish. We are over the moon to get our first clean sheet of the season, and it was a fantastic start to the bank holiday weekend!
