Quotes from the Weekend: Matchweek 4

With the majority of NWCFL teams in action across the weekend, there was plenty of scope to speak to club managers for their opinions on what their teams produced in their 90 minutes.
Dave McNabb, of Bury FC (Avro 1-2 Bury FC)
“Two very different yet excellent performances (Vs Avro and Vs Abbey Hey). On Tuesday we showed some really strong attacking intent. We moved the ball brilliantly into the final third and we were clinical in front of goal.
“Yesterday's FA Cup game was a tough and physical game where we had to show a different side. We competed and matched Avro physically in what is a very difficult place to go. Once again, we were able to show our quality in the final third and get over the line late on. Two excellent wins against two very good sides.”
Ben Greenidge, of Chadderton (Irlam 0-1 Chadderton)
“It was a really strange game, against a team we seem to struggle against, and the signs weren't great early on having lost two players to injury!
“We didn't get to grips with the game at all in the first half, and due to those early injuries a change of shape was required, which slightly helped the lads.
“In the second half we were much better and more like ourselves. We controlled the game with larger spells of possession and we deservedly got the winning goal!”
Paul Jones, of FC Isle of Man (Litherland REMYCA 1-2 FC Isle of Man)
“It’s always a tough game against Litherland, especially early in the season at their place. We started slowly and didn’t deal with Litherland’s direct play in the first 10 minutes, and deserved to be a goal down.
“Once we got our heads around the type of game and play required, the players recovered well and created a number of good opportunities - a couple of which Doyle did really well to covert - whilst limiting them to a small number of counterattacks that didn’t come to much.
“After missing some good opportunities to extend our lead in the 2nd half we showed a free mentality and willingness to defend our box as the 2nd half went on. Some really top-level defensive performances from our goalkeeper and back four maintained the lead through to the end of the game.
“Really happy with the reaction to losing midweek, and it was a great squad effort to come away from Litherland with 3 points.”
Kevin Watkin, of Holker Old Boys (Holker Old Boys 4-1 Nelson)
“The first half of the game felt cagey with neither team really taking control, but our goal just before half time gave the lads the impetus to go on and control the game and want to take all 3 points.
“In the second half, our performance was excellent and in the end, I think we got the result we deserved.”
Roy Mason, of Steeton (Steeton 1-0 Garstang)
“It wasn't a game of great quality, but we dug deep and ground out a win. It's been a tough opening couple of weeks with us building a new side, but I'm delighted in the way we've responded over the last 7 days. To get two wins on the bounce following a tough day at Droylsden last Saturday speaks volumes of the players.”
Adam Wall, of Stafford Town (Stafford Town 7-2 Shawbury United)
“We’re obviously very happy with the start we’ve had and today's result. We have more to offer though. There are not many times you can score 7 in such a competitive league though, so we will take the positives and move on to Tuesday!”
Mark Swann, of Wolverhampton SC (Runcorn Town 2-3 Wolverhampton SC)
“It's been a tough start to the season acclimatising to a very competitive league where there seems to be no easy games. Unlike the Midlands League, every game is a tough challenge and if you’re not at the races you'll come up short.
“It's been a very good week and a relief to be off the mark. The lads did very well yesterday; we've learnt to deal with the physical challenge that the league poses and had that little bit more quality in the final third that seen us through.
“However, we can take nothing away from Runcorn – they’re not a bad team at all and will pick up points in no time I'm certain.”
