Daisy Hill Players making a difference to the local Community

Members of Daisy Hill FC's playing squad have been spreading some festive cheer in the local community by donating food items to a foodbank run by Westhoughton Community Assist.
Daisy Hill manager Lee Hill and the two youngest members of the squad, 18 year olds Henry Chalkley and Harvey Roberts, delivered the food parcels to the foodbank headquarters on Central Drive in Westhoughton on Friday afternoon, and as Hill explained, plans to help the foodbank at Christmas have been in place for several months.
"Since the start of the season, at every home game, one member of the team has picked an item of tinned or packet of food, and every player then has to bring a different brand of that item", said the Daisy boss.
"If anyone brings the same item, there is a £2 fine and that goes into a kitty to buy more food. We wanted to make sure we picked items that were non-perishable, and would be put to good use by Westhoughton Community Assist. All the lads have contributed week in week out, it has been a good thing for the team to do, and the lads can be proud of what they have collected".
Harvey Roberts added: "It's an amazing service that is on offer to local people, and it's quite humbling to hear what the Westhoughton Community Assist service does for the local community. I didn't realise just how many families were struggling and in poverty, and need to use a service like this, so it was quite an eye opener. It makes me feel quite proud to think of what we have done in a small way as a team, to help local families who are struggling".
Janet Colley from Westhoughton Community Assist said: "This fab donation from the boys is very much appreciated.
"Donations like these from the local community, especially from young people growing up here, are really great. They are the people that, in the future, will be able to see the value of helping others less fortunate. It’s the life blood of a foodbank and community shop, regular and constant drops to us, helping to keep items on the shelves throughout the year".
