Cheadle Heath Nomads hosted a surprise party on Sunday, when friends and family gathered to celebrate Roy Welsh’s 60th anniversary with the club.
His remarkable service was recognised by the Cheshire FA with a special presentation. Nomads Chairman, George Gibbons, also presented him with a specially commissioned cap in the club’s claret & blue colours.
Roy first joined Nomads as a flying winger back in 1963, and, in a career of almost 25 years, made over 400 appearances, scoring 250 goals. During that time, he also represented the Lancashire & Cheshire Football League four times.
He also proudly held the position of Lancashire & Cheshire President in 1985-86. After hanging up his boots, Roy became part of the backroom staff, undertaking numerous roles, including the important offices of treasurer and secretary.
Since becoming Club President, though, Roy has become the driving force in Nomads elevation to the North West Counties Football League, guiding the club through its complex negotiations with Stockport MBC, as well as dealing with the FA and other bodies regarding funding.
His diligent work is showcased when visiting the facility at Norbreck Avenue, now rightly regarded as one of the finest in Cheshire.
As he celebrates 60-years’ service, the 79-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. He has just overseen the massive refurbishment of the Nomads bar and function room, and is now fully focussed on the next project, the construction of a brand-new hospitality suite adjacent to the changing rooms.
