Premier Division Reusch Goalkeeper of the Year

Macclesfield FC goalkeeper Sam Ashton has not only collected a Premier Division winners medal this season, he has also jointly won the Reusch Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Year Award.
Sam didn't start the season off with the Silkmen, only joining in late September when Macclesfield beat Litherland REMYCA 4-0. However he went on to play 28 games in the league, keeping 11 clean sheets at in the league in total this season, a ratio of two clean sheets every five games!
His next clean sheet didn't arrive until October, and like buses they came in three's! As well as a clean sheet at Wythenshawe Town, he also kept one at Squires Gate and at home to Padiham.
Another clean sheet came in November, a goalless draw at title rivals Skelmersdale United, with two in December at home to Barnoldswick Town and Squires Gate.
2022 was not as common for clean sheets, and although Macclesfield conceded very few goals en-route to the title, there was the odd one. That was until the last week in February when a 1-0 win at Runcorn Town reminded them of shutouts! They went on to have three more in the final full month of March, these at Padiham and at home to Ashton Athletic and Avro.
Sam was unrerstandably happy about collecting this award saying "It's not something I expected really at my age! There are a lot of good young keepers about in the NWCFL so I am delighted to win the award.
"I have had a good year though with a decent amount of clean sheets. Perhaps a lot of people think that as Macclesfield are such an attacking team that clean sheets follow. However we played a high line at times so it was important to use my experience and keep my concentation to get the shut out.
"I have to give credit also to my teammates, and I am especially grateful to the back three or back four in front of me, depending on what formation we played.
"They say you wiln as a team and lose as a team, but the same goes for clean sheets. I couldn't have done it without them there!".
