Bank Holiday Monday Division One North and South Preview
Sun 29th August 2021 | Match Previews | By Gary Langley
This Bank Holiday Monday sees a number of derby games across both North and South Divisions with permutations at the top and bottom of the table.
Looking first at Division One North, Leaders AFC Blackpool welcome neighbours, Garstang to the Mechanics Ground. Garstang had a 3-3 draw at Nelson on Saturday and have slipped off the early pace, they will face a big ask if they are to get back on it on Monday. Golcar were unlucky on Saturday as their game was postponed and they ended up having top spot taken from them. They will be looking to bounce back at the first attempt as they host Brent Peters’ Bacup Borough at the Skye Direct Stadium.
There is a big gate expected at the Neuven Stadium on Monday as Bury welcome Daisy Hill. Daisy Hill are fresh from an 8-1 beating of St Helens Town and go into this game in good form, whilst Bury are looking to keep AFC Blackpool and Golcar on their toes at the top of the table.
Speaking of ‘that’ defeat, St Helens Town look to regroup and host South Liverpool in a bit of an East Lancs Road derby on Monday. St Helens have shipped 26 goals in their last five games and will be looking to plug the gaps. South Liverpool were beaten by Ilkley Town on Saturday and will be keen to try and take the spoils from the day to keep in touch with the leading pack. Fresh from their win on Saturday, Ilkley are aiming for their third win on the spin if they can beat Nelson at the MPM Stadium.
Staying in Yorkshire, Steeton welcome Campion to Marley, these clubs are quite familiar with each other but this is their first competitive meeting for quite a while.
Ashton Town host Chadderton at Profiles Park, both looking to put pressure on the clubs above them, whilst over at Crilly Park Atherton LR host high flying Pilkington. Depending on how results go elsewhere, a Pilks win could see them top by Monday evening. Cleator Moor Celtic return to action as they host Holker Old Boys.
In Division One South, Leaders, New Mills welcome Matt Jansen’s Stockport Town to Church Lane. New Mills will be looking to keep the likes of West Didsbury at Chorlton and Abbey Hey at arms length but face a big task this Bank Holiday. Stockport Town were beaten 4-1 ovefr the weekend and will be looking to regroup.
Speaking of West Didsbury & Chorlton, it’s derby day for them as they welcome neighbours Maine Road to the Step Places Stadium. These derbies always produce lots of noise and lots of goals, so that could be quite some game and potentially a coupon-buster. Just up the road is another derby as Cheadle Heath Nomads host Cheadle Town. Lots of local pride at stake in this one and with both clubs in the top half of the table there is plenty to play for.
Abbey Hey will be looking to try and sneak on to the summit as they welcome FC Isle of Man to Abbey Stadium. Hey are on a great run of form at the moment whilst FC Isle of Man are currently just a couple of places above the drop zone and will be keen to put some distance between them and it!
Eccleshall welcome Stafford Town to Pershall Park, again, clubs in relatively close proximity who have not played each other in a competitive league encounter too often. This should attract some decent numbers as both clubs look for points with Eccleshall currently sitting in the bottom three and Stafford looking to bounce back from a couple of defeats on the spin.
Sandbach United will be looking to try and return to the top spot, one of quite a few suitors but they face a tough looking fixture at Dratyon Beaumont Park to face eighth placed Abbey Hulton United. Barnton will be looking to build on Friday nights big home win over Eccleshall as they travel to The Woodpark Stadium to face Alsager Town who are just a couple of places above them. Wythenshawe Amateurs are on the same points as Sandbach and they will also be looking to progress way into the top six as they host Cammell Laird 1907 at Hollyhedge Park.
The other game of the day sees struggling St Martins host Ellesmere Rangers, fresh from their 4-1 away win at Stockport Town arrive at The Venue. This game sees one of the wort home records take on one of the better away records.
Liots of great games to take in around the whole of the Division One this Bank Holiday. If you are heading to a game this weekend, please stay safe and enjoy the match.
