Reserve Division Trophy Final - Glossop North End 1 Irlam 2
Thu 15th May 2014 | General | By Ian Templeman
A second half goal from substitute Kyle Davies clinched victory for Irlam in the final of the Reserve Division Trophy at Surrey Street.
After a Lewis Rathbone penalty gave Irlam a half time lead, Glossop drew level within four minutes of the restart with a Callum Harrison goal, but with eight minutes of the regulation 90 remaining Davies struck to clinch what proved to be the winner.
The game kicked in gloriously sunny conditions, and in the early stages both sides settled quickly and carved out good openings.
A neat interchange on the left flank between Glossop’s Liam Nolan and Craig Lawler created a shooting chance for Lawler in the 6th minute which Irlam keeper Lee White blocked with his feet, and at the other end Irlam spurned an excellent chance five minutes later.
A raid down the right set up a shooting chance for Dean Burgess, and when Glossop keeper Jacob Luty could only parry the shot, Ryan McGreevy fired wide from 8 yards.
As the half wore on, defences were on top and the keepers were rarely troubled, but the game sprang to life five minutes before half time.
A neat through ball from Irlam’s Dean Burgess played Ryan McGreevy through on goal, and as he shaped to shoot he was tripped by Glossop centre half Jack Miller in the penalty box.
As well as immediately pointing to the spot, the referee ruled that McGreevey had been denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, and duly produced a red card for the Glossop man before Lewis Rathbone blasted home the penalty to give Irlam a half time lead.
However, four minutes into the second half, Glossop were back on level terms when Callum Harrison buried a fine header from Joshua Bridge’s free kick into the corner of the net.
Midway through the second half there was a six minute stoppage due to a disturbance in the crowd, and when play restarted Glossop enjoyed the better of the territorial advantage, but stout defending by the visitors kept the Hillmen at bay before the decisive goal arrived eight minutes from time.
After a cracking 30 yarder from Glossop’s Liam Nolan flew wide, the quickly taken goal kick led to a ball over the top catching out the Glossop defence, and Irlam substitute Kyle Davies latched on to the through ball and fired his side ahead from 20 yards.
Glossop predictably threw men forward in search of an equaliser, and after a flicked header from Nolan just missed the target, as the game moved into stoppage time Adam Kay was agonisingly close to grabbing an equaliser for the Hillmen, heading wide at the near post from six yards after getting on the end of an inswinging corner from Craig Lawler.
But once eleven minutes of added time had been played, the referee finally called a halt to the proceedings, and Irlam's players celebrated before Dean Burgess and Connor Martin were presented with the trophy by League Management Committee representative Lesley Pierce.
