It is with regret we have to report that former Atherton Collieries manager Brian Smith has passed away after a short illness. He was 57.
Brian played professional football for a number of years, most notably at Bolton Wanderers, where he was part of their successful squad in the late 1970s, which included players such as Frank Worthington and Peter Reid.
He made 21 appearances in their First Division campaign in 1978-79, including a famous 2-1 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford in April of 1979, where he set up the winning goal for Frank Worthington.
In total Brian made 57 appearances for the club, before later moving to Blackpool and AFC Bournemouth.
After his professional career ended he moved into coaching and non-league football, and was involved in the NWCFL for a number of years from the 1990s, serving as manager at Atherton Collieries, and as assistant manager at Daisy Hill and Ashton Town.
Our sympathies go to his family at this time.
