Another weekend, another round of games coming from all 3 divisions of the NWCFL, as well as the Isuzu FA Vase. Let's run through the best and worst of what the last couple of days have had to offer.

Isuzu FA Vase:

Friday:

  • The only NWCFL-based match that took place this past Friday was worth the entry fee. In a back-and-forth contest in Bolton, Daisy Hill did their best to fight back against Ashton Town after being 3-1 down at half time, but were ultimately undone by a Lewis Roughley winner less than 15 minutes from the end and lost out 4-3.

Saturday:

  • Ashville upset the odds in their FA Vase hosting of recent NPL side – now Northern League side - Marske United on Saturday. Lennox Allward and Mark Madden helped Steven Scott’s side turn around a 1-0 deficit and ultimately win 2-1.
  • In an all-NWCFL clash, Premier Division propper-uppers Colne fell short away from home against First Division North top spot chasers Atherton LR. Joe Bacon and Thomas Romano bagged either side of a Cole Exley equalizer for Colne in a 2-1 win for Atherton.
  • Resorting back to NWCFL teams beating non-NWCFL opposition, Prem outfit Abbey Hey made fairly easy work of NCEL side Beverly Town. Jordan Barnett and Saul Henderson (2) contributed to a 3-1 victory for Simon Heaton’s side.
  • Darwen FC have had a less than successful few months of the season so fae, but that seemed to be forgotten during their 90 minutes against Harrogate Railway Athletic, especially by Rio Wilson-Heyes. The forward bagged all of Darwen’s goals in their 3-0 victory to see them into the next round of the Vase.
  • Market Drayton Town continued the theme of shutouts in their hosting of Hereford Pegasus. There were no hat-tricks to speak of in this affair, but there was a brace by Nicky Parker. This, complimented by both Max Raine and Isaac Shaw, helped MDT to a 4-0 win.
  • Padhiam clearly looked over at Darwen and MDT and decided they’d carry on the upwards trend of scorelines in favour of NWCFL sides. Michael Morrisson’s side hosted Horden Community Welfare on Saturday, and send them packing in style, with a Tyler James brace contributing to an eventual 5-0 victory.
  • Another NWCFL side to bag five goals on Saturday was Abbey Hulton United. In a change of pace from their predecessors in this list, they were away from home, battling against Rothwell Corinthians, Kieran Brown got two of his team’s goals as AHU ran out 5-2 winners.
  • I made mention last week of Winsford United’s incredible active run of form, and that showed no signs of stopping on Saturday, despite the higher-level opposition to Dean Jones and Dom Johnson and their players. NWCFL Prem side AFC Liverpool were the visitors this weekend, but were sent home with little to celebrate, with Winsford winning 4-0.

Other scores:

  • Chadderton 1-1 Bury (Chadderton won 4-3 on penalties)
  • Foley Meir 2-4 Yaxley
  • Glossop North End 1-2 Sandbach United
  • Ramsbottom United 2-0 Euxton Villa
  • Ryton and Crawcrook Albion 3-0 Barnoldswick Town
  • Skegness Town 4-0 Allscott Heath
  • Staveley Miners Welfare 1-1 Irlam (Staveley Miners Welfare won 4-2 on penalties)
  • West Didsbury and Chorlton 2-0 Stockport Town
  • Yorkshire Amateur 0-2 New Mills

Premier Division:

  • There was a penalty each during the league match between Charnock Richard ans Lower Breck, both of which were converted by Nathan Nickeas and Lewis Buckley. However, Charnock managed a further two goals when Lower Breck did not. The match finished 3-1 to the hosts.
  • Another team to win 3-1, this time on their travels, was FC Isle of Man. They travelled over to the mainland to face off against PR3 side Longridge Town, and in a match that very front-loaded in terms of action, FC picked up a 3-1 victory with all 4 goals in the game coming before half time.

Other scores:

  • South Liverpool 1-1 Burscough
  • Squires Gate 0-0 Litherland REMYCA

It is also worth noting that Prestwich Heys’ home clash with Pilkington was abandoned at half time with the score at 0-0. This was due to a horrific injury to Heys’ Dylan Fitzgerald that necessitated the arrival of an ambulance. We wish the best for Dylan in his recovery.

First Division North:

  • A couple of weeks ago, Ashville beat Allscott Heath 7-4 in the First Division South and it looked like a one-in-a-thousand result on paper. Well, Bacup Borough and Maghull clearly don’t feel the same way, as their match played out exactly the same way on Saturday, Bacup, the hosts, have Toby Wright to thank for his efforts, as he bagged four, including two penalties, to help his team overcome Maghull in this 11-goal thriller.
  • AFC Blackpool also scored four at the weekend, but, unlike Maghull, they need not feel aggrieved at having done that only to lose. They travelled away to Skelmersdale United and bagged all their goals in the first half to eventually win 4-1.

Other scores:

  • Ashton Athletic 1-2 Maine Road

First Division South:

  • It has been a quiet weekend in the First Division South, with only two matches of an initially scheduled three taking place. Up first was the draw between Eccleshall and Cheadle Heath Nomads, Both Jay Ford and Matthew Sumner were on target in a 1-1 affair between these two sides.
  • In the other match from this division on Saturday, a little bit more took place. Travelling Runcorn Town must’ve felt good about themselves taking a 1-0 lead into half time against free scoring Stockport Georgians, but the hosts rallied in the second half, with a Lucas Berry brace helping them to a 3-1 win.
