The Winners of the Player of the Month Awards for September 2024 have been announced by the NWCFL.
PREMIER DIVISION
The North West Counties League Premier Division Player of the Month Award for September 2024 has gone to Lewis-Simon Byrne from Chadderton.
Lewis signed for Chadderton at the start of the season after playing for the last three seasons in the First Division North at Bacup Borough. He took a little while to settle in with two goals in July and August. However September has been completely different with a superb month for the forward.
The first two games of the month saw him help his team to a 2-1 win at Colne before a 5-2 home loss to AFC Liverpool. The third game at Wythenshawe Town saw him score the opening goal as he set his side on the way to a 2-0 win 'at home' to Stockport Town, and he was instrumental in the next game as he helped Chadderton come from 2-0 down at half time to draw 2-2 at an in-form Squires Gate.
Lew was rested in the next game at 'home' to Abbey Hey at Wythenshawe Town but came on at half time with Chadderton struggling. He put his side 2-1 ahead with a surging run from halfway before finishing from a wide angle. Abbey regained the iniative but Byrne rescued a point with his second of the game in stoppage time. Byrne was named Man of the Match by Abbey Hey in this game.
Retford United were next in the FA Vase at Avro with Byrne putting his side ahead after just two minutes then rifling a ball home after 28 minutes to make it 3-1. The start of the second half saw him complete his hat-trick by slotting home a cross from the right. He also got an assist as his side won 8-4!
The next game at Prestwich Heys saw Chadderton two goals behind again at half time, before Byrne pulled one back at the start of the second half. He added a second just before the hour from the penalty spot, and five minutes later found the top corner to complete his second successive hat-trick. He was not finished yet though, as he then secured a 5-3 win in the last minute with his fourth goal of the game as he rounded the keeper to score. This was another Man of the Match performance.
With nine goals in his last three games, Byrne was in confident mood going into the final game of the month at AFC Liverpool. Chadderton rounded off the month with a 7-1 away win, with Byrne winning a third Man of the Match of the Month by scoring his teams second goal as well as setting up three other goals on the night.
So eight appearances, three Man of the Match wins and 11 goals. Not a bad month eh! Congratulations to Lewis-Simon on his Award!
DIVISION ONE NORTH
Maine Road attacking midfielder Alex Panter has been confirmed as the NWCFL's Division One North Player of the Month for September 2024.
Alex is having his first taste of football at this level, having joined Maine Road from Poynton in the Cheshire League at the start of the season. He has been involved in every one of Maine Road's games this season and is one of the main reasons that the club are doing so well in the First Division North after their lateral move in the summer.
The first game of September for Alex came at Skelmersdale United where he scored his team's third and fourth goals in a 6-0 win. His performance in this game led to Skem awarding Alex with their Man of the Match nomination after the game.
Next up was a trip to AFC Blackpool, where Alex again put his side ahead. He put in another good performance with Maine Road winning 3-0. His third game of the month was against Winsford United in the FA Vase, a day to forget for the club who found themselves 3-0 down at half time, although Alex scored yet again just before the hour to give his side some hope.
Alex then made it five goals in four games as he put his side ahead with the opening goal of the game away at Holker Old Boys. Maine Road though went on to lose the game 3-2 in stoppage time. The final game of the month was a Macron Cup tie against Stockport Town, Alex putting in another great performance with his side coming from 4-1 down to make it 4-3 before ultimately losing 5-4.
Congratulations to Alex for a great month, with five goals in five games and a Man of the Match performance in only his second month in the league.
DIVISION ONE SOUTH
The winner of the September 2024 Player of the Month Award for Division One South for goes once again to Matthew Hearsey of Stafford Town.
Matthew was the winner of this award in July/August, and becomes only the third player to retain it since the First Division South was created in 2018/19 season. Unlike July/August though, Stafford only had four games in the September, but Matthew scored four goals in those games and picked up Man of the Match in each match he played.
His first game of the month came away at Cheadle Heath Nomads. With the game delicately poised at 1-0, Matthew converted from a corner to double his sides lead and ease the pressure on his team, with Stafford going on to win 3-1. Next came an away game at Foley Meir, where he set up the opener after a driving run into the box saw his shot saved, with teammate Patryk Mazurkiewicz tapping home. He then added his sides third with a tap in just before half time with his tenth goal of the season.
The FA Vase at Sutton United was Stafford's third game, a tough game that ended 1-1 with Stafford exiting on penalties. However the fourth goal was a five-star performance at home to Cammell Laird 1907 with Matthew in blistering form. He set up the first for Mazurkiewicz with a superb cross from the right, then added two goals himself within the first four minutes of the second half.
To summarise, another four games and four goals for Matthew. Perhaps its Stafford's opponents though who pass the ultimate judgement on Matthew's form. To the end of September, he has played in 12 league games, and picked up their nomination for Man of the Match in nine of them. Outstanding.
Congratulations Matthew!
