The curtain was raised on a new season with the Champions Cup match, where the winners of the Premier Division face off against the Macron Cup winners. This is normally held at the ground of the league winners, but Wythenshawe's ground was unavailable so Barlick took on the role of hosts for this afternoon's game.
There are often accusations that one-off matches like this are just glorified friendlies, but both sides here came out the blocks firing, wanting to start their season off with a win and some silverware. Barlick's task became more difficult after 35 minutes though as Alfie Carmichael was sent off for what looked like an elbow. Neither side was able to break the deadlock as the scores remained level when the referee blew for half time.
Wythenshawe were on top for decent periods of the game, but it was Barnoldswick who took the lead through an Andrew Hill free kick, after Kyle Haslam in the Wythy goal was given an early bath for handling outside the area. With no substitute keeper available, Adam Owen, the Ammies number 3, had to don the gloves for the rest of the game.
Going down to ten men didn't prove to be a problem for Wythenshawe, as a well worked move was coolly finished off by Kaleb Parkinson to level the scores with 13 minutes left to play, then just four minutes later Darrhyl Mason headed the ball beyond Callum Jakovlevs in the Barlick goal after he was left unmarked six yards out. The home side couldn't find an equaliser and the Ammies leave the Counties with yet another trophy under their belt as they embark on a new adventure at Step 4.
Congratulations Wythenshawe and good luck in the NPL! Thanks go to Barnoldswick in particular for hosting the fixture at short notice, and to all fans, players and officials for a great start to the season.
