We were delighted to catch up recently with Burscough, who were winners of the Premier Division PST Sport Club of the Month award for January 2026.
The presentation was carried out by League Vice Chairman Geoff Wilkinson, who is pictured presenting the framed certificate to Manager Dave Dempsey and Club Chairman Jay Hawkes.
This is their first monthly award since winning the Premier Division award in September 2021.
The Linnets have had a superb month, with six wins and two draws from their eight games played firmly placing them in the Play-Off picture in the Premier Division. They scored 24 goals in the month, conceding just seven and keeping three clean sheets.
The first game in January was an emphatic 6-2 away win at Pilkington. When Stephen Rigby put Burscough ahead just before half time, there was no indication as to the goal glut that would emerge in the second half. Tom Croughan doubled the lead on 63 minutes with Tom Douglas pulling one back ten minutes later. The two goal lead was restored five minutes later through Christian Mukoko, and that's how it stayed until a crazy end to the game.
In the last minute of normal time, Mukoko made it 4-1 before Matty Hamilton added another just a minute later. Three minutes into stoppage time, Pilks scored their second through Jack Pearce, only for Hamilton to score Burscough's sixth of the game with the last kick of the game.
A week later, Burscough made the long trip to FC Isle of Man, and returned to the mainland with all three points with a 1-0 win. Tom Croughan scored the only goal of the game on the stroke of half time.
Next was a midweek home game against South Liverpool, with Sam Turner putting them ahead on 19 minutes. Sam Mullally quickly equalised, only for William Lawson to give Burscough the advantage at half time thanks to his 43rd minute goal. The start of the second half saw Burscough increase their lead through Stephen Rigby, with Sullivan Barker making it 3-2 ten minutes into the half. Again Burscough kept going though, with Sam Turner making it four with 20 ninutes left and Callum Laird adding a fifth in the last minute.
The fourth game was a goalless draw at Cheadle Town, which was followed by another midweek home game with Charnock Richard. After a goalless first half, Christian Mukoko put Burscough ahead five minutes into the second half, followed by a second just before the hour mark from William McCarthy. Charnock quickly reduced the defecit through Ben Hoskin, only for Christian Mukoko to seal the points with Burscoough's third three minutes from time.
It was another home game on the Saturday as Prestwich Heys visited Burscough, with the score ending in a 1-1 draw. Louis Holt put the visitors ahead on 20 minutes, only for Henry Briscoe to level for the Linnets 19 minutes from time
The penultimate game for Burscough was an away trip to their own ground, as they paid a visit to their tenants City of Liverpool. The Purps shocked their landlords as they took the lead after just five minutes through Alex Priestley. Burscough responded through Callum Laird on 22 minutes and took the lead through William McCarthy five minutes later. It remained that way until two minutes before the break, when Sam Turner extended the lead and Christian Mukoko made it four.
The scoring continued in the second half with Laird getting his second of the game ten minutes into the second half. Tom Croughan added a sixth three minutes before the end, with Stephen Rigby confirming an emphatic derby win with the seventh two minutes later.
The most impressive win of the month came on the final day, with a 1-0 home win against fellow promotion contenders West Didsbury & Chorlton. After a glut of goals in the other wins in the month, this time was a tight affair with William Lawson scoring the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time.
Those performances gave Burscough 24 points from their 8 games for a 3.00 average.
Atherton LR and Irlam both ran Burscough close in the month with four wins and a draw, with AFC Liverpool having three wins and a draw from their games.
Total Games played in the Month: 8
