Fundraising Weekend At Stockport Town
Thu 10th October 2024 | Stockport Town | By Martin Fallon
Its a busy weekend at Stockport Town with two fundraising events taking place.
The first is tomorrow (Friday 11th October) when a team from Stockport Sports Village will do a walk from Life Leisure Houldsworth Village to Old Trafford and back via a different route. They will be raising funds for Salford Royal and the Devonshire Unit on behalf of Mike Tongue, the Football Manager at Stockport Sports Village.
Mike took ill in March, and was diagnosed with ANCA Vasculitis. After several rounds of steroids with no effect, Mike began chemotherapy and will continue with this treatment over the next year. At the end of April, Mike checked into the Devonshire Centre for Neuro-rehabilitation and has been receiving rehab since then.
Inspired by Mike's attuite towards everyday life, the team are showing their support with the walk, and they invite anybody who wants to join them for even part of the walk to come and do so.
Then on Sunday, Stockport Town physio James McDowell is running the Manchester Half Marathon to raise money for Cancer Research. Several of James' family members have battled cancer over the years, and he wants to do his bit to raise money for Cancer Research UK in the hope of helping to end cancer. He is also dedicating his run to the memory of those family members who lost their battles.
Jonothan Gains, Secretary of Stockport Town, applauded both efforts saying: "Mike is a much loved friend and colleague of Stockport Town, looking after our all footballing needs and requirements at Stockport Sports Village and always putting his needs before our own. Unfortunately Mike fell ill recently and has been unable to work and I applaud the staff at Stockport Sports Village who have set up this sponsored walk.
"James is also a valued member of the Stockport Town team being the club physio and his run on Sunday is perhaps even more impressive as I know I wouldn't want to run for 13 miles! They are two fantastic causes, and from myself and everyone at Stockport Town, we'd like to wish them all the best of luck for their efforts this coming weekend".
