The Winners of the Reusch Goalkeeper of the Month Awards for September 2024 have been announced this week by the NWCFL.
PREMIER DIVISION
The North West Counties League Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Month Award for September 2024 has gone to Jack Buckley from Irlam.
It is Jack's first season in the Premier Division, indeed he hasn't played in the NWCFL at all since a spell at spell at Atherton LR four seasons ago. However the shot stopper has had a superb month and been instrumental in Irlam climbing from the bottom part of the table to 8th place by the end of the month.
His finest performance of many in the month came in the first game away at West Didsbury & Chorlton. Always a tough place to visit with a large and vociferous crowd, Jack pulled off save after save to deny the home team and help his side to a 1-0 win and their first clean sheet of the season. Jack was nominated Man of the Match by his opponents for this performance.
Next up was Northern Premier League side Wythenshawe in the Manchester Premier Cup, and another superb display by Jack. One save in particular stands out with 12 minutes remaining, denying Ammies a certain goal with a spectacular stop to ensure the game ended goalless. He then saved a penalty in the shoot out to ensure that his side progressed to the next round.
Colne away was next with an save just before the break important to send the sides in level at half time. Two second half goals ensured a 2-0 win for Irlam, another clean sheet and a second successive Man of the Match win. Then it was Barnoldswick at home, where a comprehensive second half performace gave Irlam a 3-0 win and a fourth successive clean sheet for Jack.
A trip to the seaside came next with Irlam 3-0 up at Squires Gate at half time. They finally conceded in the 48th minute, the first goal that Jack had let in in 421 minutes of football. Irlam held on for a 3-2 win but were endebted to Jack for a crucial save to tip the ball over the bar late on.
Jack pulled off several more great stops to keep his side in the next game at Lower Breck in a game that ultimately ended 2-2, and could ultimately do little to stop his side losing 3-1 in their final game of the month at home to Cheadle Town.
Congratulations to Jack on his Award!
DIVISION ONE NORTH
The Goalkeeper of the Month award for Division One North returns to Atherton stopper Joseph Bickerstaffe for the second time in three awards with another superb month from Joseph.
The LR number one played in all four of his sides games in the month, keeping a clean sheet in three of them and conceding just one goal in the other to help his side to a superb FA Vase win against a higher ranked opponent.
The month started with a tough looking trip to Ashton Town. It was a game of few chances in a goalless draw, with Bickerstaffe dominating in the air to thwart Ashton's crosses and pulling out a fine save in the second half to get his side the point.
Next was Maghull at home and a relatively comfortable afternoon with a 3-0 win. Keepers have to be alert at all times though, with a commanding save by Bickerstaffe keeping his side 2-0 up at the start of the second half from a Maghull free kick. This result made it five successive clean sheets for LR.
Premier Division Cheadle Town were next to visit Crilly Park in the FA Vase. Bickerstaffe kept his side in it with some excellend stops but conceded seconds before half time. It was the first goal Bickerstaffe and LR had conceded in 521 minutes of action! The second half saw LR step it up a gear and were rewarded with a 3-1 win and a place in the next round.
Final game for LR in September came courtesey of some Friday Night Football as LR hosted neighbours Daisy Hill. It was a dominating performance as LR ran out 6-0 winners, with Bickerstaffe keeping his eighth clean sheet of the season and his sixth successive clean sheet in the First Division North.
Congratulations to Joseph for his performances in the month!
DIVISION ONE SOUTH
The winner of the September 2024 Goalkeeper of the Month Award for Division One South goes to Jacob Kirwan of Winsford United.
Jacob was at Winsford in the 2021/22 season before moving to Barnton and then Alsager Town, but returned to the Barnton Stadium at the start of this season. His constant communication to the team and defensive unit in front of him affords him the opportunity to keep so many clean sheets and lays the foundation for the team to attack with the confidence they are solid at the back.
The first game in September for Jacob was away at Wolverhampton Sporting Community. A good performance from Jacob was decisive in a 2-1 away win, and he was unlucky not to keep a clean sheet with Wolves' goal bouncing off both goalposts before nestling in the net!
A clean sheet followed in the next game as Winsford beat Market Drayton Town 7-0 in the Edward Case Cup, and Jacob kept another clean sheet in the next game as they played out a goalless draw with Runcorn Town. Both games saw Jacob alert and on his game for the entirety to ensure that Winsford did not concede.
The third game of the month saw Winsford put in a good performance in the FA Vase to win 3-1 at Maine Road. Cruising 3-0 at the break, Maine Road hit back at the start of the second half, with Jacob and his defensive unit putting in a great performance in the second half to secure his side the win.
Jacob then kept his third clean sheet in four games as Winsford closed out September with a 1-0 win at Shawbury United. Leading from a goal just after the break, it was another good defensive display to record another clean sheet.
Congratulations Jacob!
