First Division North - Maghull

Club of the Month in the First Division North is Maghull, who have won the award for the first time since returning to the NWCFL at the start of last season.

Maghull sit proudly at the top of the league at the end of August. After drawing their first game of the season, they have romped to victory in the next five games, including an impressive away win at a side from a higher league in the Isuzu FA Vase. They scored a whopping 21 goals so far and conceded nine.

They started the season by coming from 2-0 down at home to Squires Gate to draw 2-2, the equaliser from Nathan Peet coming in stoppage time after Wil Hoey had pulled one back. The following week saw a superb performance at home to Droylsden where they were 4-0 up after an hour, that game eventually finishing 4-3. Peet scored twice more with Sam Smith and Darren Brannigan also on target.

A first win on the road then came at AFC Blackpool, falling behind before Harrison Worden and Nathan Moffitt turned things around. A 5-1 thumping of last seasons runners up Nelson was next, with all five goals for Maghull coming in little over half an hour. Smith scored twice, with Brannigan, Jacob Till and Nathan Moffitt getting the others.

Perhaps the performance of the month came next at Frickley Athletic in the Vase, one division higher in the pyramid in the Northern Counties East Premier Division. Smith gave them an early lead with Brannigan adding a second just after the break. Worden then scored a penalty before another Smith goal and an own goal made it five. Frickley scored a consolation with a few minutes remaining.

The final game was at Steeton, with a Smith brace putting them two goals ahead in the first half. The home side pulled one back before Moffitt secured the win with their third goal eight minutes into stoppage time.

That gave them 21 points from their 6 games for a 3.50 average.
