Atherton Laburnum Rovers' promotion to Step 5 was confirmed on Saturday afternoon with a 6-0 thumping of Bacup Borough at Crilly Park.

Dave Jones' men have hit form at the right time, with the latest win being their fifth in a row, including crucial victories over Nelson and Droylsden in the last week.

Cal Hunter opened the scoring inside the first minute before adding a second shortly after the half hour mark to send LR well on their way to the title. A brace from Thomas Romano within five minutes of the restart put the match beyond any doubt, and with the visitors toiling, substitutes Harvey Sample and Ryan Talbot got in on the act to cap off a fantastic day for the club in the Crilly Park sunshine.

The latest victory was the club's 25th of the season, a further three draws contributing to their current points tally of 78, five clear of nearest challengers Nelson with just one more game left to play.

After being defeated in the play-off semi-finals last season, the club return to the NWCFL Premier Division for the first time since the 2011/12 season, and it is an impressive turnaround after finishing second-bottom of the division just two seasons ago. Congratulations to everyone at Atherton LR on a fantastic season and enjoy the celebrations!

Manager Dave Jones said this to the NWCFL following the game: "It means everything to us all to get over the line, it’s not just about yesterday it’s about everyday of the last 10 months. It’s a long hard slog, the players and staff have applied themselves brilliant over the season and been consistently the best team over the season. I’m so pleased for everyone to get this reward for all their hard work.

To gain the club promotion is brilliant for everyone involved in the club. There is a team behind the team which is outstanding, volunteers and committee that make the matchday experience for players and supporters so brilliant at LR, and after a difficult last decade for LR supporters it’s great to have the club back on track pushing on again.

It really is a full club effort and I’m a massive believer when everyone from the chairman to the bar volunteers to the players is pulling in the same direction you can achieve anything you want."

Many congratulations to all of the players, staff, volunteers and supporters at Atherton LR.
