1. The Vase continues
And so has passed the second round of the 2024/25 iteration of the Isuzu FA Vase. There were 34 teams representing the NWCFL left in the competition before Saturday - now 20 remain.
Your choice cuts include Abbey Hey overcoming Penistone Church in a 6-goal thriller by winning 4-2; Bury's continued excellence in nationwide cup competitions, with their 3-0 win over Burscough; and First Division South side Foley Meir going the distance in a 4-4 draw with Coton Green, eventually winning 4-3 on penalties.
2. Maghull march on in the ECC
Elsewhere in cup action, the tie between two o f the NWCFL's newly-promotes to decide who would get a serious bite at the cherry in the Edward Case Cup also took place on Saturday, as Maghull faced Thornton Cleveleys.
The Liverpool-adjacent outfit proved dominant in this clash, establishing a 4-1 lead at half time and eventually winning 5-2 over their Blackpool-based counterparts. Jacob Till bagged two as Joe Burns' side made headway into one of the NWCFL's staple competitions.
3. GKs of the Month awards
Our intermittent Players/Managers of the Month awards for September have been dished out and presented to their rightful winners over the course of the last week or so. Namely the Goalkeepers of the Months for the First Divisions North and South.
Firstly, in the North, Ben Barnes was rewarded for his displays for struggling Skelmersdale United; and New Mills' Joey Oldham was given his plaudits for his work behind the back line in the South. Huge congrats to our winners!
4. (W)Irlam
Things are simply looking up for Irlam in the league at the moment. At the weekend, they travelled to Blackpool to face Squires Gate and ran out as 3-2 winners, thanks in part to Declan Daniels' brace.
This win is their 7th on the spin in all competitions, including passing Wythenshawe FC on penalties in the Manchester Premier Cup. No other side in the NWCFL has managed 6 on the bounce in recent games - apparently, John Main and his players make a team to beat.
5. Gritty Georgians
One thing that doesn't often see much light shed on it are the NWCFL disciplinary tables - at least, not until the end of the season when the fair play awards are dished out. Let's change that, shall we?
Despite the relatively little league action that took place at the weekend, Stockport Georgians were still involved in a match that saw one of their players, Aiden Dwyer, sinbinned by the referee. Their opponents, Alsager Town, did pick up two bookings in this match, but that is not enough to unseat Georgians as the most card-happy team in the NWCFL this season so far, averaging over three disciplinary points per game as of now.
