Abbey Hey secured promotion back to the NWCFL Premier Division for the first time since 2018-19 with a nail-biting penalty shoot-out win over Stockport Town.
Stockport had taken the lead on 28 minutes with a goal from Danny McLoughlin, only for Abbey Hey to level just after the break with a goal from Rhys Clooney. The game from that point was tense, as you would expect, both sides having chances to win the game but also mindful of what was at stake. The final whistle blew and it was penalties and the stadium, full to the brim with an impressive crowd of 904 folk saw the lottery of the penalties take place.
The home side had no luck in the shoot-out as Abbey Hey converted every penalty and took the win at the Sports Village, returning to the Premier Division after an absence of five years. They were presented with the First Division South Play-off winners trophy by League Chairman, Paul Lawler.
Congratulations to everyone at Abbey Hey.
