Following three seasons in the Premier Division, Skelmersdale United have been promoted to the Northern Premier Division One West.

The Lancashire club finished second, just five points behind winner’s Macclesfield, and gained promotion after emphatically winning a play-off tie against Gloucestershire side Cinderford Town. The 150-mile journey was well worth it, as Skem ran out 5-1 winners with top-scorer Michael Howard netting four at The Causeway Ground.

Paul McNally’s side also performed well in the Macron Cup, beating table-topping rivals Macclesfield in the quarterfinals before falling in the final four to eventual cup winners Charnock Richard.

The club were part of the North West Counties’ first season and spent 13 years between 2006 and 2019 in the Northern Premier League before suffering relegation and returning to the NWCFL for the past three, far from ordinary seasons. The 2020/21 season also saw them reach the First Round of the FA Cup for the first time in 50 years, before being knocked out by Harrogate Town.

Chairman Paul Griffiths sees this as a huge step forward for the club but was hasty to add praise to the NWCFL

“It’s hectic at the moment, getting ready for next season. I wasn’t able to get down to Cinderford for the play-off match, so I had people texting me the scores all afternoon!

“We’ve been in the Northern Premier League before, we’re excited about returning but also don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. Next season is about consolidation and then the year after we may start to think about promotion. We’ve got a good two-year plan in place.

“Our time in the Counties has been brilliant, it’s been a joy working with the people involved in the league. It’s been highly competitive, it’s great that we were able to push Macclesfield all the way to the end of the season. This club has had some real struggles in recent years, nearly ceasing to exist in 2017, but that’s all behind us and we’re firmly looking towards the future!”
