Five Things We Learned 2026/27: Week 13

Another week, another series of matches from the NWCFL. Let's run through the best and worst of what the last week has had to offer.

1. Winter is coming

Storm Boelo made far too many headlines last weekend, and unfortunately, it had a direct impact on many of the NWCFL matches that were scheduled on Saturday.

The Macron Cup was hit the hardest, with seven postponements coming because of waterlogged pitches throughout the North West, and another four to speak of from league games. Despite the weather in general getting colder and drizzlier, hopefully this is not a sign of things to come as October becomes November and we move into the festive period.

2. Speaking of the Macron Cup…

Dreadful weather be damned! There was still plenty of action that took place on Saturday in the cup, and plenty more in rearranged fixtures that came on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Choice cuts include Burscough’s statement 8-1 win against Halewood Apollo on Friday night; FC Isle of Man turning a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory against Maghull; Wolverhampton Casuals netting a 93rd minute winner in a 3-2 win against Crewe; Fulwood Amateurs upsetting Euxton Villa with a 4-1 win in a Preston derby of sorts; and Prestwich Heys conceding an 89th minute equaliser before scoring a 90th minute winner against New Mills. Some games might’ve been delayed, but more of them delivered!

3. Droylsden back on top in the Prem

Away from the Macron Cup, there were three Premier Division matches that were scheduled for Saturday (one of them was postponed thanks to Mother Nature – apologies, Longridge Town and Trafford).

Thankfully for Droylsden, their pencilled-in home game against Glossop North End withstood the wrath of the weather to go the full 90 minutes, and maximum points for the Bloods have taken them back to the top of the table in the absence of a league game for previous leaders Nelson. They’re in the hot seat for now, but their closest challengers do have a game in hand, so watch this space!

4. Eleventh heaven for Eccleshall

Last week, Widnes Town and Dawley Town played out an 11-goal thriller at the Marine Travel Arena, and the game earned its own separate entry into this list. Amazingly, Monday saw the First Division South brandish another game that featured 11 goals, but this one told an entirely different story.

Prior to this week, Eccleshall’s biggest ever win since joining the NWCFL was a 9-0 home victory over Ellesmere Rangers in August of 2019. Seven years later, and they’ve joined the elusive “double-figure winning margin” ranks by putting Telford Town to the sword in an 11-0 win. And they did that away from home, just for good measure!

5. Four-midable Darr and Parker

When one team scores 11 goals in a single match, to hear that one of their players scored four all on their own doesn’t sound all that surprising. Still, you’ve got to be in the right place at the right time, and Eccleshall’s Nicky Parker frequently was on Monday, going one better than a hat-trick as his side ran riot at Telford.

Perhaps more surprising was that Charnock Richard, playing last night in a rearranged Macron Cup fixture from the weekend, also had one of their own score four in a game. The ever-reliable Jordan Darr had bagged a hat-trick by the hour mark of his side’s eventual 5-0 win over Bacup Borough away from home, scoring his fourth in the last three minutes of the game to put the cherry on the icing on the cake.
