Five Things We Learned 2024/25 - Gameweek 18

1. Breck beat Bury!
It had to be this. For the first time in the NWCFL this season, Bury have lost a game. It’s taken 22 matches, but Dave McNabb’s side have been put to the sword in the league, and the honours are Lower Breck’s, and theirs alone.
Breck took a 4-1 lead at one point in this game, but the final score was 4-3, with Bury doing their level best to climb a towering mountain with 10 minutes left. It’s a result that sees Breck cement themselves in the play-off places and sees Bury drop down to just one place above them in the table, 3rd, albeit with 4 games in hand. And they still have 3 games in hand on table-topping Ramsbottom United.
2. Summing up the Macron Cup
It’s that time again. After seeing more than half of the weekend’s scheduled action postponed due to the weather, the Macron Cup is our Tuesday night saviour! Let’s run through the highlights.
Lower Breck came away with a place in Round Three after sneaking past FC St Helens 2-1 on away soil; Market Drayton Town kept up their hot form with a 4-0 smashing of Foley Meir; Ramsbottom United avoided an upset with a slender 1-0 win over Stockport Georgians; and Allscott Heath and Stafford Town went the distance after a 2-2 draw, with Town just about defeating their hosts in a penalty shootout. There was one other game to talk about too…
3. Heys snap their streak
Turning to Bury FC’s close geographical rivals, and a result of theirs in midweek has seen a different record of results broken. Before Tuesday, Heys’ last win in 90 minutes from games competitions was all the way back at the end of August – that’s a whopping 17 games (not including a penalty shootout victory over Irlam during that time).
Here we are at the end of November, and Heys have repeated that feat. Just as they beat Squires Gate 1-0 three months ago, they’ve now seen off Cheadle Heath Nomads by the same scoreline in Macron Cup. Granted, this result does nothing to improve their league position - bottom of the table, in case you were wondering – but a morale boost from this result could be gold-dust going into their next few games.
4, One from one in the First Division North
Like I said earlier, Mother Nature was not kind to the NWCFL this past weekend, with only one game from the First Division North taking place. Euxton Villa, the hosts of this particular game, certainly made the most of the opportunity they had.
With one of the few teams above them in the league, Nelson, playing the visitors, Villa proved that their home record this season in the First Division North – a record that boasts zero losses – is no fluke. They shut out Nelson and scored a 2-0 win to see them put the pressure on their fellow play-off chasers to re-close the gap they’ve now opened,
5. One from one in the First Division South
Wouldn’t you know it, in the First Division South, there was just the one game to talk about from Saturday, too! High-flying Alsager Town were the only side from the division who were able to host a match last weekend, but, given the result, they may want to wind back the clock and not bother.
Market Drayton Town, 10th at the time of this game, might not have thought they’d come away with much visiting 3rd placed Alsager, but they upset the apple cart from minute one and dominated the game. Four different players scored in a 5-0 smashing by Dan Dawson’s men, and they climb to 9th, whilst Alsager will have to rebuild before travelling to Cheadle Heath Nomads this coming weekend.
