Congleton Town continued their fine Emirates FA Cup run on Tuesday evening with a home win against Northern Premier League side Newcastle Town in a 2nd Qualifying Round replay. That took their tally of NPL scalps to three this season with previous round victories away at Nantwich Town 2-0 and away at Bootle 4-1.

Remarkably the win against Newcastle Town was achieved with a hectic last 15 minutes with the Bears trailing 2-0. Arron Johns pulled a goal back having only been on as a substitute nine minutes earlier. That lifted the spirits and atmosphere within the Bears fans and Richard Duffy netted five minutes later to level the scores.

With extra time looming, George Sankey's cross was met with an Arron Johns glancing header in the first minute of additional time to send the home fans in the 563 crowd wild with delight. Ironically it was a Newcastle Town goal in the first minute of additional time on the Saturday before that denied the Bears a 1-0 victory in the first match.

The Bears are the lowest ranked side still in the competition, and the draw for the 3rd Qualifying Round at least gave the Bears a home tie. However the opposition - AFC Fylde from the Vanarama National League North  - will present the toughest challenge so far. However, the match on Saturday 1st October will kick off at 12.30 pm as the BBC have chosen to cover the match live on the BBC iPlayer.

This is the second time this season that the BBC has selected a NWCFL team for coverage having done Bury AFC in a previous round against North Shields. Like Congleton, Bury AFC are still in the competition and will travel to Clitheroe in the next round. With Clitheroe just one division higher in the Northern Premier League Division One West, Bury AFC will fancy their chances of progression. The Clitheroe game is also on Saturday 1st October but kick off is at 3.00pm.

Good luck to both sides.
