AFC Liverpool Retain The First Division Trophy

Two second half goals in the space of ten minutes from Andy Olsen sealed victory for AFC Liverpool over Cheadle Town in the First Division Trophy Final at Flixton.
Olsen's strikes ensured that the trophy returned to Merseyside for the second year in succession, and means The Reds are now the first club to retain the trophy since its inception in season 1989-90.
The first chance of the game arrived on 4 minutes, when AFC Liverpool's Karl Gornell picked up a ball wide on the left, and after cutting inside a defender, he sent an angled shot across the face of the goal and wide.
But it was Cheadle who opened the scoring after winning the first corner of the game in the 10th minute. Paul McCormack swung the ball in to the far post, and Phil Chorley's header into the centre of the six yard box found James McDonagh, who stole in front of his marker to guide a header past Paul Willis in the AFC Liverpool goal.
On 17 minutes Andy Olsen gave a warning of his intentions, when he fired a shot over from 30 yards, and two minutes later set up a shooting chance for Karl Gornell who cracking volley from 25 yards beat Cheadle keeper Steven McDonagh and rebounded off the crossbar.
McDonagh had to look lively a few minutes later when a cross into the box deflected off the head of his team mate Barry Cotterill, and the Cheadle custodian had to react quickly to push the ball over the bar.
As play swung from end to end, AFC's River Humphreys collected a pass from Andy McCoy and swung a cross into the box which almost found the incoming Andy Olsen, while at the other end Barry Cotterill volleyed wide when he got on the end of a Ben Roberts free kick.
One of the key moments of the game arrived seven minutes from half time, when an AFC Liverpool move broke down in midfield and Cheadle's Paul McCormack played a fine pass forward that sent Ben Brooks in on goal.
As Brooks reached the edge of the box, his shot went through the legs of AFC keeper Paul Willis, but the ball took a crucial deflection off the keeper's heel and flew inches wide of the post.
The opening stages of the second half saw both sides struggle to pick up their first half momentum, but AFC Liverpool drew level seven minutes after the restart courtesy of Andy Olsen, who headed home a River Humphreys free kick from close range.
Ten minutes later, the same combination delivered what proved to be the winner, as a high hanging free kick from Humphreys found Olsen in space, and he rose to send a header across the keeper into the far corner of the net.
As the game wore on, Cheadle tried their best to get back on level terms and with 16 minutes remaining James McDonagh did well to get on the end of a cross flicked into the box, but his header flew over the bar.
In the closing stages, Cheadle's forays forward inevitably left them exposed to a counter attack, and Andy McCoy twice had chances in the last five minutes. Both were created by Tod Bamber, who first set McCoy up for a header that went straight to the keeper, and then played McCoy in on goal for a shot that flew just wide.
In stoppage time, Cheadle's Scott Clarke received his marching orders after being shown a second yellow card, and in a final flurry, the last action of the game saw a Cheadle corner kick swung into the far post that evaded attackers and defenders alike.
The referee's whistle brought proceedings to a halt, and Liam Coyne became the first captain in NWCFL history to hold up the trophy twice, after it was presented to him by League Chairman Dave Tomlinson and Management Committee representative Frank Clayton.
