Five Things We Learned - Gameweek 3

Tue 16th August 2022 | Five Things
By Jay Cooper

With another round of NWCFL football passing by, here are 5 things we learned from Gameweek 3.

1. Was a World Record set at Runcorn Town?

We are not sure if it is a world record, but it is definately most unusual and not something that we can recall ever happening before. Last Tuesday's game between Runcorn Town and FC St Helens finished 4-0 to the visitors, with every goal scored against a different goalkeeper!

The match started with normal custodian Connor Eastham in goal and he conceded the first. Just after the half hour, he was adjudged to have brought down a forward so received a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity. Forward Chad Whyte went in goal for the penalty which was scored. Minutes later, Whyte was replaced in goal by substitute Marcus Perry who was deemed a better choice. Marcus conceded just before half time.

During the second half, the Runcorn Town management must have deemed that Marcus was required more in midfield, so he was moved to midfield with another substitute Tom Brookes going in goal. And with 12 minutes remaining he became the fourth keeper to pick the ball out of the net after FC St Helens scored another.

2. More goalkeeping heroics at Sandbach from Stafford

Another tale involving a replacement keeper came at the weekend game between Sandbach United and Alsager Town. After just three minutes of the match, Sandbach goalkeeper Eric Merner went off injured and with no substitute keeper on the bench, club captain and midfielder Jordan Stafford volunteered to go in goal.

With brilliant distribution and a set of safe hands, Sandbach kept their first clean sheet of the season to beat Alsager 1-0 in the local derby, much to the delight of onlookers.

We wish Eric a speedy recovery from his injury, and hope that he doesn't have too much trouble getting the shirt from Jordan!

3. FootiePrint are a lucky charm

For the unaware, FootiePrint are a company who partner up with teams in the lower English Football Pyramid to bring the fans the wonderful programmes that they read week in and week out. Last season, Bury AFC, a FootiePrint partner, roared to success in the NWCFL Division One North, taking the league title by 11 clear points, and they've since put their foot down in the Prem, currently sitting 4th after 3 games.

This season, Pilkington, another FootiePrint partner, have established themselves as the pacesetters in D1N, and currently top the pile due to their wildly superior goal difference over fellow 4-game 100% side Chadderton. Maybe it's something they're putting in their print?

4. Can Wythenshawe Amateurs keep this going?

The Ammies are now the first team in the NWCFL this season to be the only side from their Division with a 100% win record still intact. Perhaps even more impressively, Shane Goldrick's side have only conceded once in their opening 4 games, whilst returning fire with 10 goals of their own.

Their results list thus far reads: Ammies 4-0 Alsager; Ammies 1-0 Stockport Town; New Mills 1-3 Ammies; and Ammies 2-0 Brocton. With all this taken into account, it probably won't shock you to read that they are currently leading the pack in Division One South. Who is going to be the team to stop them? It'll be interesting to find out.

5. Peaks and troughs for Foley Meir

The Staffordshire outfit are the only team in Division One South who are yet to play their 3rd league game of the season. This has a lot to do with the fact that they've featured in the Edward Chase Cup whilst their league compatriots have been competing against one another. Foley have seen success in the ECC too, coming away with a 2-1 win from their trip to Rocester, and that was off the back of a win by the same scoreline away to Cleator Moor Celtic.

However, they've been brought down from cloud 9 by Abbey Hulton United in their most recent game, suffering a crushing 7-1 defeat. This game was the 3rd already this season to feature 8 goals, but a bigger win margin we are yet to see. You can never get to comfortable in the NWCFL.
