Wythenshawe Town boss James Kinsey has said his side have left ‘no stone unturned’ when it comes to preparing for their Buildbase FA Vase Fifth Round tie at Anstey Nomads.

The south Manchester club have already gone further in the competition than ever before in their 76-year history, a run made even more impressive by the fact they also currently sit 3rd in the Premier Division.

But, while they briefly overtook Skelmersdale United to sit just behind leaders Macclesfield, Kinsey has remained grounded given the club’s objectives at the beginning of the season.

“Top six. That was our aim at the beginning of the season, but we did want a run in the Vase because it can be a lot of fun,” he began.

“Anything beyond this is a bonus and while the final (on 22nd May) is actually on my 30th birthday, we can’t be thinking about Wembley at all. When we went to Bacup Borough in the Third Round, we won on penalties after drawing 3-3 but it still felt a bit flat after. We just had so many injuries in October the prospect of adding games to our list felt a bit daunting.

“We can finish second in the League, for sure, especially after beating Skelmersdale recently, but we knew from the start that we were not going to win it. That’s why the Vase is important both financially for the club but also to the fans as it creates memories.”

Having knocked out Northern League outfit Consett with a 90th minute winner in the last round, Kinsey and his team are now well prepared for their trip to Leicestershire to face The Nomads, taking inspiration from former divisional rivals and current FA Vase holders Warrington Rylands.

“We’ve done our research for Saturday. Anstey have a few players cup-tied; we know how they play and what their pitch is like,” he continued.

“We’ve tried to leave no stone unturned because we’re going for it and genuinely believe we’re the best side left in the competition. They play a 4-2-3-1, the same as us, and the lads are training in preparation so we’re doing all we can.

“I’m good mates with Dave McNabb, Warrington Ryland’s gaffer, and he’s been class in giving us some tips about preparing for Vase matches. You want to learn from people who have been there and done it and Dave has got all that knowledge and experience which he’s passed on to us.

“Hopefully all this is enough, and we’ll be in the Quarter-Final draw come Saturday evening.”

Going into the tie having won seven of their past eight games in all competitions, Town can’t be doing much more on the pitch to deliver a memorable season, but it’s off-it where Kinsey believes the emphasis must be when looking to the future.

“Wythenshawe has a population of around 100,000, it’s a huge fan base that we could do better at getting onside,” he noted.

“There’s a lot of clubs in south Manchester so we know there’s competition, but our attendances are growing and we’re under no illusion that in the summer, we need to be building ways to improve the matchday environment. Making it more enjoyable for families, for kids, that’s the club’s aim and there’s strong backing to ensure this happens.

“Next year, our aim will be the same, to finish near the top of the pile so it’ll be an entertaining one for fans. Our players are working hard, running through brick walls and are really fit so you have to give them full credit. If we keep going in the Vase, who knows what could happen next season.”
