Rollback 37 years ago when fashion, music and society were a lot different, and you have the 1983/84 season. The NWCFL was only in its second full season, but with 56 sides up and down the region playing every week, there was certainly some entertaining football being played.

The opening weekend saw 33 goals, as St Helens Town defeated Darwen 4-0 away from home to top the table at the end of the first matchday.

A week later, 150 fans saw Glossop finally record a win having drawn their opening two games, they defeated Lancaster City 2-0. Winsford United bagged six without reply against Leyland Motors, whilst Curzon Ashton managed to put 7 passed Darwen who went on to have a terrible season.

Lancaster City ended the month smashing eight passed Leyland Motors, whilst Stalybridge Celtic sat unbeaten at the top of the table, having collected five points from their opening three games.

Following a tough August for Penrith, they found their feet in September and amassed seven points lifting them into the top four of the standings.

Formby had a difficult month, and after their 16th final position the previous season, things didn't get much better, having collected just seven points from the first two months - and conceded 16 goals in four days, firstly in the league away at Prescot Cables, then in the FA Cup away at Stalybridge Celtic,

Looking over the next few months, most games went ahead with barely any postponements which mean few midweek games in the league. Eight games took place on Boxing Day 1983 with 41 games in the First Division alone.

Stalybridge Celtic went on to eventually win the league - going 18 games unbeaten from mid-December to April - a run which saw Celtic lift the trophy having collected 60 points from 38 games.

They chose not to be promoted at that time, but three seasons later, they won the title once more then were promoted to the Northern Premier League in its new Division One.

Penrith and Radcliffe Borough both finished on 55 points, whilst Burscough was just three points behind.

At the other end of the table, Ashton United was relegated on 19 points, but Darwen propped up the table have won just two games and drawn two all season. They conceded 111 goals in that time and had a goal difference of -82.

Current NWCFL sides competing in 1983/84 Division one are Burscough, St Helens Town, Congleton Town, Winsford United, and Bootle.
