The Buildbase FA Vase took centre stage on Saturday as the Second Round of the prestigious competition got underway with 10 NWCFL sides taking part.

Four NWCFL sides made it into the next round following their victories. Vauxhall Motors cruised passed Sunderland Ryhope, dispatching the Northern League side 4-1 - Karl Noon grabbing a brace. Meanwhile, over at CW12, an all-NWCFL affair saw Congleton Town narrowly beat Maine Road 3-2 whilst Lower Breck came from behind to defeat Shildon 3-2.

Arguably the game of the day came at Inglewhite Road as Longridge Town treat their 219 spectators to a thrilling 6-4 win against Thornaby. Paul Turner grabbed a hat-trick as they made their way into Monday's draw.

Another argument for the game of the day was another all-NWCFL tie as Northwich Victoria hosted Wythenshawe Town. The home side ran into a 3-0 lead. Town got one back before Victoria made it 4-1. Liam Crellin Myers scored the away teams second of the game just before the break but the game barely got underway before Vics got their fifth. Three quick-fire goals saw James Kinsey's side level at 5-5. The game ended at that scoreline and even after thirty-minutes of added time, they could not be separated and will fight it out again on Tuesday evening in a replay.

However, the three remaining NWCFL sides didn't make it through. Rylands was narrowly beaten by NCEL Premier Division side Grimsby Borough 1-0, whilst Barnoldswick Town lost 2-0 to Stockton Town on the road and Irlam lost 5-2 to Consett.

In the NWCFL Premier Division, 1874 Northwich overtook Bootle at the top of the table, following an impressive 9-0 away win at Litherland REMYCA - Scott McGowan and Jake Parker both grabbing hat-tricks for Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison's side.

Elsewhere Charnock Richard sprinted to a 4-0 victory against high flying Whitchurch Alport, whilst Padiham defeated Hanley Town 2-0 to go 16th in the standings.

Ashton Athletic continued their impressive recent form, winning 4-0 at Squires Gate, whilst Winsford United ran riot versus Burscough dispatching them 6-0.

Avro and Runcorn Town rounded off a great day in the NWCFL top flight as Lewis Lacy grabbed an injury-time equaliser for Lee O'Brien and James Hampson's side as the game ended 2-2.

Nine games in the NWCFL First Division North was scheduled but Ashton Town's game against Shelley was called off just forty-five minutes before kick-off.

AFC Liverpool were the biggest winners of the day, winning 8-2 against Holker Old Boys - James Salkeld the star man taking home the match-ball.

Whilst Cleator Moor Celtic won 3-0 away at AFC Darwen, AFC Blackpool fought off a late comeback from Bacup Borough to defeat Brent Peters side 3-2, whilst Chadderton had an afternoon to remember, beating Steeton 5-3 in an epic game at Andrew Street.

Emley AFC initially went ahead against Atherton LR but went down 3-2 as the side from Greater Manchester came from to hold on to the win.

A Yves Zama trio of goals secured all three points for Nelson as they defeated Golcar United 3-2. Meanwhile, over at Pilkington, they secured all three points against Daisy Hill running out 5-1 winners, whilst Prestwich Heys moved up to third in the standings with a slender 2-1 win against St Helens Town.

Seven games to place in the NWCFL First Division South and there's no other place to start than at New Mills. They initially came from behind to lead with eight minutes left. But, Cammell Laird 1907 rallied late on at Colm Lynch netted a penalty then Sean Breen scored a dramatic injury-time equaliser sharing the points at Church Lane at 4-4.

On paper, it would seem that Abbey Hey versus Abbey Hulton United would be a derby with the two sides sharing a name, but they are 52 miles apart, and it was the home side who were celebrating come 5pm as they defeated Hulton 2-0.

Meanwhile, at Barnton, Eccleshall returned home with all three points with a 2-0 win, whilst Cheadle Town are now up to 15th after a 3-0 win over Ellesmere Rangers - Patrick Davin bagging a second-half hat-trick.

FC Oswestry Town kept up their winning league run as they won a tight affair 1-0 at Wythenshawe Amateurs.

Finally, two further games saw draws, with William Wells netting a last gasp equaliser for St Martins as they drew 2-2 against Alsager Town and the only goalless draw of the weekend came at West Didsbury & Chorlton who drew 0-0 against Cheadle Heath Nomads.

Well, you don't have to wait long for the action to return to the NWCFL, as Whitchurch Alport host Squires Gate in the NWCFL Premier Division on the first of six consecutive days of action.
