Ian's Claim To Fame At LR

While 1874 Northwich manager Ian Street is hoping to set some records as the Greens first ever manager, he already holds an unusual claim to fame at one of his former clubs Atherton LR.

Although he didn't spend many years of his career as a player at the club, Ian has the distinction of making his first and last appearance for LR with a gap of almost 15 years in between.

During his playing career, Ian turned for a number of clubs, starting at Wigan Athletic in the mid-1980s, and he then had spells at Chorley and Horwich RMI before moving to LR.

Ian said: "Before I went to LR I was at Horwich RMI for a couple of seasons from 1986 to 1988, and in 1988 we won the GMAC Cup against Weymouth.  From there, I went on to LR and finished the season off there".

Ian made his debut for LR on Saturday 18th February 1989 in a 2-1 win over Ellesmere Port & Neston, as one of four LR debutants who had joined the club earlier in week to play in new LR manager Steve Tickle's first match in charge, and made an impressive start.

"I scored both the goals in that debut game for LR", he recalled. "A half volley from the edge of the box and then a header for the winner".

After leaving LR a few months later, Ian played at a number of other clubs before he began to look at managerial roles.

"The first North West Counties club I managed was Tetley Walker, although I had been at Golborne Sports before that, where I won the Mid-Cheshire League and cup double.", he said.

"I then moved back to Atherton LR to work with Tom Foster, initially as his assistant, but was still registered as a player.

"I was joint manager with Tom when I had my last game as a player (at semi-pro level) which was at LR".

Ian's final appearance arrived in a League Challenge Cup tie when Atherton LR hosted Glossop North End.  The game was played at Crilly Park on Tuesday 21st December 2004, having been postponed from the previous Saturday, and Ian went out on a high, coming on as a substitute for LR in a game that they won 4– 0.

A glance at both teams on the night reveals a number of familiar names, who like Ian are still involved in the League today.

The LR team had their current manager Ross McNair at centre back, West Didsbury & Chorlton coach Steve Settle in midfield, and Phil Howard (now at Wigan Robin Park) in attack.

Glossop lined up with current skipper Dave Young in defence, and although listed as a substitute in the programme line ups, Sam Hind started up front, after sharing the pre-match journey to the game with Press Officer Jonathan Haggart, who recalls joining Sam on a pre-match meal of takeaway pizza!

Ian said: "I had pretty much finished playing then as I was 40, and as it turned out to be my last appearance as a player, it was a good game to go out on".

The front cover and team line ups page from the match programme issued for Ian's last game are pictured above.

LR's Programme Editor at the time Tim Lees, has provided the images, and recalls that as the match was supposed to be played on the Saturday but was postponed till the Tuesday, he had to make some last minute adjustments to the programme.

Tim therefore printed off the League newsletter from the Saturday, wrapped it in a little cover with the match details on the front, and other bits on the other three sides and inserted it into the Saturday programme, the front cover of which still had the original date.
