Introducing Mick Storey

After years of using my limited talents to varying effect in various Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning amateur teams, exuberant youth inevitably gave way to middle aged mediocrity, and I finally accepted that time had taken its toll on what could be called my football career, if you permit me a bit of poetic licence.

From there, I moved from being an enthusiastic player to an interested spectator, and having neither the financial resources or the inclination to spend my hard earned cash on watching overpaid and overrated prima donnas at the top end of the game, who were just as capable of serving up a poor performance as I was, I took to watching non-league football.

What a great decision that turned out to be. For me, this is real football. Real passion for the game oozes out of every tea hut, turnstile and club house, occupied by true football people who do what they do for the love of the game.

On the field, players play not for financial gain, and in many cases pay for the privilege of turning out on Saturday afternoon or midweek. The commitment and dedication of everyone involved deserves greater praise, acclaim and publicity than it gets from a media obsessed with celebrities.

Therefore, in my own modest way, I'd like to do my bit to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative in non-league football.

I'm a "glass half-full" rather than a "glass half-empty" sort of bloke. If someone was to ask me what tune I'd want played at my funeral I'd go for "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life".

So, over the coming weeks and months, I'll taking a reflective and hopefully upbeat look at non-league football issues in general and the North West Counties League in particular, and delivering them in what will hopefully be a coherent manner on this website.

Based on my own experiences and observations, and throwing in a few opinions here and there, I'll give my take on the current issues at our level of football.  It's unlikely that everyone will agree with everything I write about, so maybe we can get some good going debates kicked off along the way as well.

I look forward to you joining me on my journey around the non-league scene.

Until the next time………

Mick
